David Letterman has backed his successor Stephen Colbert and suggested CBS canceled The Late Show because he was 'always shooting his mouth off' about Donald Trump.
The 78-year-old late-night legend created The Late Show in 1993 after NBC denied him the chance to succeed Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show.
Colbert took over for Letterman in 2015 and took the show in a decidedly more political direction but despite leading in the ratings, a shrinking late-night landscape led CBS to claim losses in the tens of millions of dollars.
In his first comment on the show's cancellation, Letterman noted that his show was more about political satire than his version of The Late Show but was still complimentary, calling the decision by CBS 'pure cowardice.'
'I think one day, if not today, the people at CBS who have manipulated and handled this, they’re going to be embarrassed, because this is gutless,' he told former Late Show producers Barbara Gaines and Mary Barclay.
Letterman then said that he believed CBS was acting on behalf of Skydance CEO and incoming Paramount CEO David Ellison to make their lives easier after they acquire Paramount, taking away a constant critic of Trump.
'Hey boys, here’s what we’re gonna do: not only are we gonna get rid of that guy, we’re gonna get rid of the entire franchise so you don’t have to worry about another guy. It’s gone,' Letterman said.
The long-time talk show host noted CBS's $16million settlement with the Trump administration over a deceptively edited interview with election rival Kamala Harris, which Colbert had previously mocked as a 'big fat bribe.'

“David Letterman’s net worth is estimated to be $400 million”
****** This clown can easily keep Colbert on the air by paying CBS 40 million yearly out of his vast fortune. Put yer money where your big fat mouth is Dave! Talk is cheap!
There are tons of liberal billionaires who can help out/donate to keep the Colbert show up n running. Same for PBS and NPR!
Which is why nobody watched him, which is why the advertisers bailed, which is why the show was cancelled.
So, yes - Trump's fault.
‘Hey boys, here’s what we’re gonna do: not only are we gonna get rid of that guy, we’re gonna get rid of the entire franchise so you don’t have to worry about another guy. It’s gone,’ Letterman said.

I think Dave is more angry about “Late Night” being cancelled than Colbert being fired. Dave should blame Colbert…..Im quite sure Dave didnt spend every night doing the same schtick as the other late night hosts bashing the sitting President and hosting folks that all did the same bashing.
Faux fury- they aren’t willing to pony up and pay the $40 million in losses that the show was garnering because of the lame humor-deprived colbert. So his opinion is worth spit.
“...Hey boys, here’s what we’re gonna do: not only are we gonna get rid of that guy, we’re gonna get rid of the entire franchise...”
Letterwoman is starting to realize that excruciating pain is coming his way, much more. The elimination of scumbag Colbert is just the beginning. The leftwing a$$wipes that have been in control of ALL the broadcast networks for 50 years is finally ending. First PBS and NPR, next to go is the print media.
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine!
Just wait until Skydance figures out the entire CBS News operation is a big money-loser and pulls the plug. You ain’t heard nothing yet.
Maybe if he was half as funny as Letterman he wouldn’t have been canceled.
I dumped TV in 1997. At the time, my favorite late night personality was David Letterman. In fact he ended up being the only one I watched. That was when he had dark hair.
Typical. This is why I started calling him “Bitterman” 20 years ago. He’s always angry and bitter instead of funny or entertaining. This started about 25 years ago.
Dave looks like Santa Claus, so why not act like him and send CBS 40 million a year to keep Colbert and company afloat. Help out the homeless Colbert show and the 100 people working on it. Who will soon be fruitlessly pounding the pavement.
Letterman was actually funny and entertaining in the 20th century. Be became....or revealed himself to be....an extremely bitter hard left c*** after around 2005. Remember when he spewed a bunch of laughable leftist Bullshit at Sara Palin in 2007?
We found Colbert’s one viewer.
Yawn. Has-been.
The petulant child revealed himself after he was denied the “Throne” at NBC.
He sold his soul to Orcah to get her to make an appearance on his show. He had been trying for years - he was never the same after that.
He needs to grow up.
Letterman is a pinhead
“Letterman was actually funny and entertaining in the 20th century. Be became....or revealed himself to be....an extremely bitter hard left c*** after around 2005.”
He was very good with great musical guests. Paul Schaffer was always super-charged and had the music cracking.
Dave’s repartee with guests was witty, and they all would kill to be on his late-nite show. Up coming movies got publicized on this show.
If you were a tourist, it was a major score to get tix to the Letterman show.
“nd the 100 people working on it.”
I thought the staff for Colbert was 200 pax.
