The Russian navy plays a crucial role in Moscow's conflict, but it has suffered significant losses since the war began in February 2022, with approximately half of the Black Sea Fleet damaged or destroyed by Ukrainian maritime drones and long-range anti-ship missiles.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's prized Black Sea Fleet was nowhere to be seen to thwart heavy bombing by Ukrainian drones Wednesday night amid Moscow's largest naval games this year, which comes as a warning to the West.
Putin ordered the 'July Storm' drills, which involve more than 150 combat ships, 120 aircraft, and 15,000-plus military personnel. Footage shows that the exercises have started in the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, the Baltic Sea, and the Caspian Sea.

The Black Sea Fleet - heavily depleted by losses to Ukrainian missiles and maritime drones - is not taking part in the drills. Last year, Russian media outlet Izvestia reported that the sea trials would not commence before 2025.

That was awful nice of Putin to gather the remainder of his fleet in one place, and announce where they were, so they could be target practice by the Ukrainians.

Where is Ukraine’s navy anyways?
Considering the state of the Russian navy, as shown by how the Moskva was barely seaworthy before she was sunk, letting NATO record and analyze it all may not be such a good idea. US and NATO are going to be looking for weaknesses, like how many or how few of the radars, sonars and fire control systems in the Russian fleet actually work. In the worst case, how well damage control works.
This show of force may end up showing more weakness than Putin expects, if he is capable of admitting it.
