I can see the Macrons not focusing on the truth on the matter, but the harm created from this story being spread. So, in that case, whatever the truth is about Brigette may not matter. It depends on how the lawyers argue their case.
You can be truthful, but still slander somebody because what you said has resulted in material harm even if what you said was the truth.
