JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said Monday that the officers in a viral video from a February traffic stop that made the rounds on social media this weekend have been cleared of criminal wrongdoing by the State Attorney’s Office.

However, Waters said that the officers’ actions during the Feb. 19 traffic stop where William McNeil Jr. was arrested are still under an internal review by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Body cam video shows McNeil closing his car door after interacting with Officer D. Bowers, the responding officer. In the video, Bowers can be heard telling McNeil to step out of the vehicle as he is under arrest for resisting. Both interactions were not included in the original video posted to social media.

After he was outside of his car, Waters said officers found “a large unsheathed serrated knife on the driver’s side floorboard.”

Waters said McNeil ended up being arrested on charges of resisting an officer without violence, driving on a suspended license, and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.

On Feb. 20, McNeil pleaded guilty to and was adjudicated guilty of resisting a police officer without violence and driving on a suspended drivers license.

These local news pages are the worst. You literally can’t get to the video that is advertised without having to see a bunch of other junk

What likely happened is the cop who patrols this area of town on a daily basis probably knows this guy and had run ins within the past, he was looking for reason to stop him.

The area of town this happened in is not the best to say the least.

Come to find out, the driver was driving on a suspended license, had a knife on the driver’s side floorboard and had a significant amount of marijuana in his possession.

Granted the reason for the traffic stop was BS, it turned out much more was wrong with the driver than a BS traffic offense.

He was driving on a suspended license.....had he complied with that and not gotten behind the wheel to begin with none of the rest would ever have occurred.

He set everything into motion by doing what he was told NOT to do......which seems to be a common thread in a certain ethnicity.

My mention was only about the window, but if you watch the whole video it looks like it would have been a normal traffic stop if the driver had treated it as such and complied, things were calm and normal before they got worked up and weird.

That’s basically the recipe. The law will favor the police. They have a tough job. It’s not hard.

I recently saw a judge side with the defendant, no probable cause - but still told the guy not to try and be ‘smart’ with cops in the field, which he did. It doesn’t end well.

But you can’t pull someone over on a hunch. It is not a police state. If he knew the driver was driving suspended, ok but he made up a BS reason and everything after that is fruit of the poisonous tree.

He didn’t pull guy over on just a hunch, he used no headlights being on, it’s a BS reason, but still a valid reason.

It’s like Rudy Guiliani and his broken windows theory, plus his stop and frisk tactic.

He cut crime in NYC significantly, in Jacksonville these types of tactics have cut the murder rate in half, Jacksonville had been the murder capital of Florida, aggressive tactics are one of the reasons that is no longer the case.

Not a lot of similarity between the two. None, actually.

This man thought he could get away with being polite while disobeying police orders.
