Not the best and brightest. X-ray or sniffer dog would have proved invaluable. Too late now.

I’m confused by the sawing in half...
I guess I’m too old - Can’t you just unscrew and remove the triggering mechanism?

Such a waste. Cost/benefit analysis, anyone?

This is about as smart as the campers in Utah who found an M79 grenade at the national guard range and decided to put it in the campfire to “see what would happen.”

Kabloowie is what happens.

I worked withe a dude who used to keep an inert grenade on his desk... Or that’s what he said... Who knows?

Maybe the only thing that saved us all was his retirement.

In basic training an instructor died because he thought a law rocket was inert. Blew up and sent many of my squad to the hospital as well.

All three were assigned to the LASD Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosives Detail.

A special division of Police Squad.

Sorry. Too soon?

I’m confused (not surprisingly these days), they were “in a car” cutting the grenade in half???

Rule #1: The gun is ALWAYS loaded.

Rule #2: The grenade could be perfectly safe under a variety of circumstances, and it’s best not to worry too much about these things.

Sounds like they were booby trapped to explode on opening by a trip wire attached to the box lid.

An “inert” grenade is a bit like an “loaded” gun.

It takes more time and is inconvenient, however, it is wise to safely demil unknown source ordinance remotely, in a fragmentation containing enclosure, on a closed range.

MY Condolences.

...military-style grenades...

After some energy intensive brain work, I have concluded that there might not be any other variety.
