Update : Warner drowned off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday, Costa Rican National Police told ABC News. Warner’s official cause of death was asphyxia, police said.

Warner died near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica, police said. Police said he was caught by a high current in the water and was discovered Sunday afternoon.

You’ve got to watchout for those riptides... If you swim right, or swim left you’ll be good... Swim towards shore and you’ll never get there.

Wiki says he was caught in a strong current.

Very sad.

Unless the water is really cold or really rough, or heart attack, or stroke, or injury are involved, it is not hard to survive a strong current.

Dog paddle, head above water, float with it.

When the current slows - and it always slows - swim back to shore.

There might be locations where an out going tide pulls you a couple hundred yards off shore.

That would be frightening, but not fatal.

Bottom Line - the #1 killer in strong currents is PANIC.
