As June comes to an end, so do many events associated with Pride Month, a month-long celebration of sexual diversity and gender variance — often geared towards increasing the visibility of the LGBTQIA community, as well as combatting stigma and advocating for equal rights.

But the battle to eliminate stigma and achieve these rights will certainly continue, as recent debates about which bathrooms transgender men and women should use illustrate all too well.

For years here at 13.7, Barbara J. King has been writing about what she calls the spectrum of gender expression, and "the fact that gender identity isn't only — or even mostly — about biology and that it's most certainly not reducible to the sex one is assigned at birth." That's an especially important lesson in light of new research that identifies one of the sources of prejudice against transgender individuals: the (mostly mistaken) belief that men's and women's stereotypical characteristics do, in fact, come down to some immutable feature of one's biology.

I think this fact gets overlooked by many people.

I do not know, but Johns Hopkins has (or had) stated the they would not do “gender reassignment” surgery on patients, regardless of age, because the best evidence is that it does not benefit the patient. The Director of Medicine prohibited it. They looked at all the evidence, and at best it provides a very temporary and short lived benefit, more wishful thinking than any real life change. Patients who did not undergo “therapy” did as well or better.

From what I know about doctors, and I have known a few socially, the ones who do it are probably more influenced by ideology than financial gain. Cosmetic surgery is probably more for financial gain than the patient’s best interest, but even most plastic surgeons would not perform procedures that are more likely to harm than help.

From a biological perspective, the main purpose of two genders is reproduction and survival of the species.

If a person is truly other than a reproductive gender, then biology is saying: This person is defective, not useful for survival of the species and should not be reproduced.

Personally, I separate sex from gender. You are either XX or XY. That’s it. However, if you want to identify as a wheel of cheese or a golden retriever named pickles, that’s your choice. It doesn’t mean I have to respect it, nor does it mean I have to accept it. A while back I called someone sir and he got all bent out of shape because I didn’t say ma’am. When I asked him if he sits when he pees, the look on his face was precious. Alinsky says ridicule is the lefts worst enemy.

By the way, who or what organization determines how many genders there are and what they are?

This is what our tax dollars have been paying for - NPR and PBS spreading LGBTQ propaganda especially to our children.

Good, that's correct. Because "sex" is a biology term and "gender" is a linguistics term, and there should be nothing "personal" about it....that's just the way it is.

That was established millennia ago as languages were evolving, but it depends on the language. In English there are three: Masculine, Feminine and Neutral. (he, she and it)
