Ground squirrels are taking over a North Dakota city and officials are not amused

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The Richardson’s ground squirrel weighs less than a pound, is about a foot long and is native to the northern Plains.

The little creature also is a ferocious tunneler, and it’s exasperating the people of Minot, North Dakota, where it’s burrowing everywhere from vacant lots to the middle of town, and growing more plentiful over the past two decades.

Now North Dakota’s fourth-largest city is fighting back, but even the pest control guy leading the charge acknowledges that it will be difficult to turn the tide against the rodent.

If these are actually prairie dogs, they should call Gay Balfour.

This is not my writing.

Laz posted this in 2004. I liked it so much I post it in squirrel threads when I see them.

We have cute little squirrels here. A few of us put out nuts for them at night, by morning they’re always gone. Squirrels bury them by the hundreds and usually remember where they are in snowy winter months when they need them.

Not the subject of this article, but I wanted to put in a good word of squirrels.

Yeah, the 22 WMR is better choice over the 22LR. My choice was my rem 700 in 22-250, with the 55gr rounds. I also have a rem 788 in 22-250 that is not quite as accurate but it was my dad’s with an old Weaver scope. Down side is the center fire rounds are a bit expensive and my blasting days are past as my vision is about gone.

The dachshund is designed to go after burrowing animals. I had one as a kid and she loved to dig.

**12 year old boys, .22 lr. and a $1 bounty. Problem solved.**
Don’t know if you can trust them these days. In town the air rifle would be quieter.

Minot AFB. A joint military school for snipers would help but those high caliber weapons would scatter them all over.

Alturas, Ca. I remember a graveyard being overrun with beldings. Went back a couple years later and they were gone. Formers turned to poison and it seemed to be working.

And that may be the caliber I was trying to think of.

Sorry about your vision. :-(
