Indiana Fever Fever coach addresses physicality directed at Caitlin Clark after latest injury: 'It just is what it is'

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White addressed the constant physicality star guard Caitlin Clark continues to face in the league after Clark went down with what appeared to be a groin injury during Tuesday night’s win over the Connecticut Sun.

Speaking to reporters after the 85-77 win. White was asked about her thoughts on the "physical battle" Clark has faced – both throughout the season and in Tuesday’s game.

"Are you trying to get me fined again?" White asked with a laugh, before expanding on her answer.

"There’s a level of physicality that they’re able to play with against her. I knew it as an opponent, and I see it as her coach. I’m not exactly sure why, it just is what it is," she said. "We’ve got to help her learn to adjust and use it against them in certain ways. We’ve got to find some ways to make it a little easier for her."

Admittedly, White added that the WNBA as a whole has seen more physical play on the court than ever before.

“We know it’s happening, and we know why. But since she’s white, screw her!” <— pretty much the message from the WNBA

The @WNBA and their refs allowing Caitlin Clark to get mugged every damn night. She packs the stands, she gives you record tv numbers.

You are ruining the star of your league and now she is hurt again.

YOU DON’T DESERVE GOOD THINGS.
The @NBA figured this out 30 years ago. pic.twitter.com/ESQ6PA446U— Society of Golf Historians (@SHistorians) July 16, 2025

Why didn’t Coach White just say that “some people did something”?

A reminder to Coach White, and to everyone else: That magic phrase only works when the victims are white folks.

I'm wondering if this year's 1st draft pick is getting beaten up, too?

She's white (Paige Bueckers) and a prolific scorer.

What about Kelsey Plum - she's white and a lights-out scorer. Why isn't she getting beat up?

There’s a saying. They’re “invited to the cookout”.

Well, it sure is generating a LOT of publicity for the WNBA.

Perhaps, THAT’S where it’s coming from.

People who have likely never held a basketball, much less attended a game in person, are suddenly experts on the sport.

Caitlin needs better conditioning if she is going to continue to play with those monsters.

Michael Jordan had to lift weights because he was getting beaten up by the Bad Boys (Detroit Pistons).

Yeah it is. It's called racism.

“The @WNBA and their refs allowing Caitlin Clark to get mugged every damn night. She packs the stands, she gives you record tv numbers.”

“I’m not exactly sure why, it just is what it is,” she said. “We’ve got to help her learn to adjust and use it against them in certain ways. We’ve got to find some ways to make it a little easier for her.”

I officiated my first basketball game in the early 1960’s in my pre-teens calling the very youthful. I watched the amateur game during it’s transitions that has turned the sport from a game of passing, shooting, and strategy immolating the NBA into a fist fight with boundaries and few rules. As the players got bigger, stronger, and less talented, the league started protecting those that filled the seats.

But with the desperate shirt tailing situation with the WNBA of former failed leagues they have tried to create the same mystique of greatness with their player right away that it took the NBA years to move away from i.e. the team distinction. So what you are seeing is the WNBA trying to grow up to the big bucks ahead if it’s time. Clark is one of the first of the stars to sell as has been noted. They need more like her before they can afford to challenge each team’s star physically like the NBA does.

Interesting that the NBA style of physicality has morphed down to college and high school competitions. And the problem is well displayed with a movie statement, “must learn walk then learn fly.” And they feel the growth is in the gladiator style trying to create challenges to their most successful star yet: the thug off the street.

She will have an abbreviated career. And the gangsta girls will celebrate her exit.

Tell me again how men and women are the same.

Why do you believe the Indiana Fever coach? She’s one of those lesbians too.

Our ancestors were wise. We had our "traditions" for a reason.

CC needs Bill Laimbeer to coach her team. Funny thing is that he has coached in the WNBA as recently as 2021.

But that won't happen today because they're not going to let him coach.
