Trump says US will send Patriot missiles to Ukraine, EU will pay for them

US President Donald Trump says he will send Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine, saying they are necessary to defend the country because Russian President Vladimir Putin “talks nice but then he bombs everybody in the evening.”

-snip-

“We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need, because Putin really surprised a lot of people. He talks nice and then bombs everybody in the evening. But there’s a little bit of a problem there. I don’t like it,” Trump tells reporters at Joint Base Andrews outside of Washington.

“We basically are going to send them various pieces of very sophisticated military equipment. They are going to pay us 100% for that, and that’s the way we want it,” Trump says.

He plans to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss Ukraine and other issues this week.

President Trump himself just said it is a “large part of” 17 Patriot batteries being discussed. Poland, smartly, placed large defense orders years ago whene Putin launched his genocidal war of choice on Ukraine. I assume they’re just going to send much of what they receive now on to Ukraine.

No, it’s MORONS like the Neocons who get us into endless wars. I happen to oppose that policy.

Oh, I’ve not forgotten at all that Ukraine was a key part of the USSR’s weapons programs. However, the USSR broke up a lot of that work into various republics, so that none on their own could get too ambitious. For example, if a system was being produced in Ukraine, at least a few key components for which Ukraine didn’t have the tech were produced elsewhere.

Further, Ukraine lost most of its weapons industry to corruption, complacency, pressure from the West, and the general attitude they didn’t need it any more - after all, there was that Budapest Memorandum, among other less formal reassurances, and a Russia that under Yeltsin and then, early on, Putin, was plenty problematic but not in the sense of a large scale military threat. One might say the Ukies, like the Euros, got lazy, and that’s a very tough behavior to get out of, unless there is imminent reason not to. Even just before Russia invaded in 2021, Ukraine’s leaders were downplaying the threat from Russia.

Europe in general disarmed hugely, Ukraine included, and is now struggling to play catch up. (A considerable discussion of its own.)

As an aside, I find it remarkable that the Euro-NATO nations have committed to 5% of GDP for defense. Putin and Trump have, evidently, really scared the hell out of the Euro’s present leadership. This is good from the standpoint of reducing the US’ costs, but IMO, sustained it is exceedingly dangerous from the standpoint of long term stability. Will Europe be a “gentle giant”, or will it eventually revert to its own historical behavior(s)? And, should we be confident in the behaviors of people operating under the motivation of fear? The history there sure is not very good...

At the same time, it’s one thing for the representatives to NATO of the various Euro-NATO countries to make this 5% commitment. It is quite another to actually get that through the politics of it. For example, just how the heck does Meloni and whoever comes after her get Italy to 5%? It doesn’t seem possible, barring some major, fantastical event. Say, an errant Oreshnik straight into the heart of Rome itself?

Back on topic: Don’t get me wrong, the Ukies have done quite well in beginning to rebuild their own defense industry, considering that effort is constantly itself under attack. But, it is nowhere near sufficient @ present. I can go into long detail if you wish, but it’s not necessary: The proof is in the pudding, which in this case is the considerable number of Russian drones and cruise missiles getting through, in these very large scale attacks. (The ballistic missiles are a problem too, but, there, clearly Ukraine does not yet have the tech resources to manufacture its own credible defenses.)

In the case of drones, both on offense and defense, the tech Ukraine needs is AI and stealth. On the defensive side I would add sophisticated sensing networks and communication, feeding, you guessed it, more AI, to help coordinate and even generate the targeting.

That last (advanced drone tech) won’t come immediately. The US has the tech, although some of the AI and so on is not quite fully fleshed out (that we know of) into mass production. Therefor, a large fleet of Japanese Zeros would be a nice ticket for shooting down Russian drones. No development needed except better detection & coordination put in place, really. :-)

Russia is still a RUSSIAN country at heart, the USSR simply being a slight variant.

Yeltsin’s gov’t can perhaps be considered a real variant, but, he was usually drunk, and I question just how much control he really had.

IMO, you have to go back to Elizabeth.

Zelensky and his Western backers are openly mocking the peace process with promises that regardless of whatever deal President Trump negotiates, as soon as as Trump is out of office they will consider the deal null and void and subject to re negotiation on their terms

Neutral links, please.

Not that this sort of view is uncommon, historically. Many apply it to the Budapest Memorandum and Bill Clinton / the USA.

NATO doesn’t even (still!) maintain non-German NATO troops in the former East Germany.

That said, I can’t imagine Ukraine not demanding at least some sort of “trip wire” NATO force in Ukraine, and I doubt even less that peace can be kept without a large and capable peacekeeping force of some sort in place.

How to get to that last and make it agreeable with everyone, much less find someone neutral willing to put tens of thousands of their troops’ necks on the line, well, I certainly have no answer...

Sounds like a good case for World War 3. No other choice!
