Animal Farm: Last Line Underscores The Tragedy Of The Situation
Times of India ^

Posted on 07/08/2025 9:22:01 PM PDT by CondoleezzaProtege

"The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."

The last line of the book highlights the tragic and ironic transformation that has taken place on Animal Farm. At the beginning of the story, the animals rebel against the oppressive humans, driven by a vision of equality and justice. They establish their own government, led by the pigs, who promise a better life for all. However, as the story progresses, the pigs gradually adopt the same corrupt and oppressive behaviors as the humans they once despised.

The line emphasizes the complete betrayal of the original ideals of Animalism, the philosophy that underpinned the revolution. It suggests that power and greed corrupt absolutely, regardless of whether the leaders are humans or pigs. The animals outside the farmhouse cannot distinguish between the pigs and the humans because they have become indistinguishable in their behavior and exploitation of the other animals. This implies that the pigs have become just as tyrannical as the humans they overthrew, if not more so.

It also relates to the other animals on the farm who, despite their initial hopes for a better life, become disillusioned as they witness the pigs' transformation. The line underscores the tragedy of the situation, where the animals' dreams of liberation are shattered, and they realize that the new regime is just as oppressive as the old.

Reading this the animals could not believe how many times the man could say the same thing. No matter how many times they read it, the same thing was said. They learned that the writer was repetitious and kept saying the same stuff. For a while they thought he might say something different but no he kept repeating one thought, over and over.

Whenever I think of Animal Farm, I think of the story of Boxer and it still brings me near tears.

Boxer was the horse who was so faithful, brave and strong. He believed anything could be solved by working harder. He was worked nearly to death doing everything he could to try to help the animals, only to be hauled away to the glue factory in the end.

In Lord of the Rings, orcs were once men but they were transformed by being under Sauron.

The point was that any one of us could be transformed into something inhumane, if we ended up in an inhumane system. It was an allegory of the Soviet Union.

In America, Boxer could be an allegory for whites. We work hard to keep America together, but Democrats are pretty open about eliminating us.

Why we have a limited government - that almost the entire “new world order” misrepresents and dislikes.

Especially the parts where government agencies and agents must comply with the authority that is enumerated . . . and otherwise are prohibited from assuming powers.

IF only the people would step in order to enforce such limitations.

In Lord of the Rings, orcs were once men

According the Silmarillion, they were once elves, captured, tortured, and corrupted by Melkor, which makes their corruption even greater.

Yes, the first orcs were sourced from elves. However, elves reproduce very slowly, basically only to replace themselves as they die off. However, the rapid reproduction of orcs suggests that not all orcs were originally elves, so they had to be men because men reproduce at a much more rapid rate.

Tolkien was always refining his work, as he realized the flaws in his work.

I personally Tolkien was slowly coming around to the idea that orcs were artificial life forms, possibly cobbled together from other life forms and twisted until they assumed their final form. Tolkien originally wanted orcs to be machines, because he was uncomfortable with life being taken at all.

The only thing certain is that Morgoth and Sauron had to start with an already existing life form and twisted it.

In Tolkien’s world, it became an issue as to where orcs go upon death, because there was no hell in his world. You wing to the Halls of Mandos if youre an elf and parts unknown if you’re man. What do you do with an orc? Orcs, that were originally elves would have to go to the Halls of Mandos and orcs that originally were human would have to go where men go.

That’s why he was slowly coming around where orcs were neither man or elf, because they then just cease to exist when they die.

“That’s why he was slowly coming around where orcs were neither man or elf, because they then just cease to exist when they die.”

Yes, it was never definitely determined where the Orcs came from. He never said flatly that Orcs were corrupted Elves, just that was the belief. In “the Two Towers” Treebeard talks about Saruman breeding Orcs and Men and what a great evil that would be, as if that had not been done before.

I believe it was written that orcs were once Elves. Corrupted, enslaved and tortured by Morgoth.

I have to admit I have never read Animal Farm. I ran across a copy of it the other day looking through some of my kids’ books. I’m gonna go dig it out and dust it off

My last 8 years of teaching were tutoring adults for the GED tests.

One of the differences I found interesting was that adults need to be exposed to a new concept an average of SEVEN times to actually retain it.

Repetition became my main strategy for my students success.
