Putin's sly dig at Trump as he mocks US Independence Day

Vladimir Putin has taken a thinly-veiled swipe at the USA as the nation gears up to celebrate its Independence Day on July 4. The Russian President couldn't resist pointing out that he considers Russia to have played a key role in helping the much younger country achieve statehood during a call with his American counterpart on Thursday. Putin said: "Russia played an important role in the formation of American statehood, including through the War of Independence 250 years ago, and then during the Civil War, which ended 160 years ago."

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov added: "Of course, he congratulated Trump on the national holiday of the United States, celebrated tomorrow ... It was stated that our countries are linked not only by the alliance in the First and Second World Wars, but also by deepr historical roots."

Tsar Paul was the first European head of state to recognize the independence of the U.S., but Russia hardly gave it any support. Without the support of the French, the British would have ended the American rebellion in due course. Americans owed the French for their independence, not the Russians.

    It's essentially true in that
  1. Russia indirectly helped American ships trade freely during the revolution against the British.
  2. Russia tried to mediate the American Civil War and supported the Union.

As for the Rooskies, well, Western Europe can't be too worried since none of them have reinstituted a draft, and Western Europe has been buying Russian energy products, in violation of sanctions, all along.

FWIW, I consider our so-called Western European allies a greater threat to our republic than the Rooskies or the ChiComs.

Strongly doubt that version of history...

Catherine the Great ruled Russia was tight fisted and land grabbing and would be more likely to want to colonize America than to help her be an independent country...

Yep

If the people were to decide, esp the young ones, they all want to be free and part of Western and South Korean/Japan culture.

The Iranian people are beautiful well educated.

All these shit hole countries have bad politics.

Maybe just maybe Trump might be the catalyst to free them all.

Amazing how not one, not one democrat has the courage to join us.

What Russia and the US needs to do is to team up against Islam. Putin needs to talk to Trump because Islam is the problem on the planet today.
