7 Engineers Suspended Over $2.3 Million Bridge with 90-Degree Turn

Central India’s Madhya Pradesh Government recently suspended seven engineers for the faulty design of a 200 million rupee ($2.3 million) bridge with a 90-degree turn.

The new Rail Over Bridge in Bhopal was announced 10 years ago and cost the state of Madhya Pradesh over 200 million rupees to complete. It was supposed to improve connectivity between Mahamai Ka Bagh, Pushpa Nagar, and the station area with New Bhopal, but all it has managed to do so far is spark controversy over a major blunder in its design – a nearly 90-degree turn built into the bridge. Photos of the questionable feature recently went viral on Indian social media, raising concerns over safety and how engineers could have overlooked such a critical error.

After the controversial bridge started training on X (Twitter), Chief Minister Mohan Yadav launched an inquiry into the situation and subsequently announced the suspension of seven engineers involved in its design, as well as another inquiry into the activity of a retired superintendent engineer in connection with the faulty design.

At least they built something... Democrats would spend untold millions and have nothing to show for it (except laundered cash).

“recently suspended seven engineers for the faulty design of a 200 million rupee ($2.3 million) bridge with a 90-degree turn.” If I took that train, where the heck am I going back to?

India is a low IQ country. Average IQ around 70, similar to most of Africa.

I guess they had to build it to find out what shape it was.

“New Bhopal”. As opposed to the old ‘Bhopal”.

All of its inhabitants were poisoned to death in their sleep and Chevron didnt even break a sweat about it.

“7 Engineers Suspended Over $2.3 Million Bridge with 90-Degree Turn”

Great writing on that headline. It sounds like these guys are dangling on a rope way high up from a bridge that is shaped like an ‘L’.

Mel Brooks would maybe like to see this one.

The article doesn’t make it very clear that it is an auto bridge over railroad tracks. Marginally functional, but traffic will have to slow to a crawl to make the turn, especially when there is traffic both ways.

It also sounds as if the engineers wanted to do something better, but the government refused to buy the necessary land.

Bhopal just can’t catch a break!
At the mention of India’s Bhopal region, most people over a certain age will think of that gas disaster. On December 3rd, 1984, over 500K people in that location lost their lives due to a gas leak from a Union Carbide pesticide plant.
The gas was Methyl Isocyanate (MIC).

Picture from the link gives the appearance of a pedestrian bridge over railroad tracks.

If intended for vehicle traffic, big problem.

If they suspended the seven engineers from the bridge, is it now a suspension bridge?
