If you’re on a mission to live longer (and stronger!), you probably know that regular exercise plays an undeniable role in longevity. Walking and strength training in particular have a ton of benefits that can help keep you movin’ and groovin’ for years to come—but is one of them better at adding healthy years to your lifespan? And how should you balance walking and strength training to create a holistic routine?

Those questions were recently raised by Blue Zones, an organization committed to researching worldwide longevity. Via the Instagram account, the org posted about how if you want to live to 100, walking every day is better than going to the gym three or four times per week.

Meet the experts: Sarah Pelc Graca, CPT, is a certified personal trainer and founder of Strong with Sarah Weight Loss Coaching. Rachelle A. Reed, PhD, ACSM-EP, is an exercise physiologist in Athens, Georgia. Natalya Vasquez, CPT, is a certified personal trainer, health coach, and founder of On Your Terms Coaching.

I recently got a new knee and have rediscovered the joy and benefits of walking.

It had been years since I could walk even a half mile. I did ride a bike and continue to lift weights, but newly walking again activated some muscles that had fallen to disuse.

Walking and weight training are the perfect combo for health.

I do plenty of walking. For aerobics I do a stint on a Bowflex elliptical. It’s a great machine. You’re right about weight training, but I do a lot of heavy weeding too. Pulling French broom bushes on steep slopes is not for wimps.

That's terrific!

My Brother got his knee done - he's like a new man.
Looking forward to going to Gettysburg for walking tours.

I hope you enjoy many heathly & active years!

I read a story in my local news paper of a woman who had 120% of bone density because she liked gardening.

Yeah, yard work counts for exercise.

I wear a heart rate monitor to know my level of effort on every exercise (Polar.com).

I regularly peg it in the yard lol

Lots of buzz lately about “Japanese walking” which is just 30 minutes broken into 3 minute interval of fast walking followed by 3 minutes slow.

I like that walking can be done anywhere anytime and without a lot of preparation. Most of the benefits of running with much lower risk of injury.

Two years ago, my Dr convinced me to get a Pro-Form cycle with IFit training. I’m more of an anaerobic weight lighting guy, so I resisted. Today, I’m down 25 pounds and have cycled roads and trails (virtually) all over the world. Just did Biokovo, Croatia a few minutes ago. Learning geography and staying toned. I highly recommend it.

Yes!

I have a stationary bike, and real bikes too.

But walking is my new toy.

I believe running and jogging is the biggest waste of time, because it generates Cortisol.

Walking is the way to go, but also if you can do it, I highly recommend sprinting. But if you haven’t sprinted since you were in high school, you have to build up to it slowly.

My man has two new hips and one new knee.

He's in good shape, normal weight, eats well. Blood work great.

In his early years he was very athletic so all the joint aggravation may have come from that.

Or it's genetic. He was adopted so we have no idea on his parentage.

It does not matter what you do, as long as it’s a daily workout of some sort. Be it at the gym, the wood shop, long walks or trying to chase down that hot 25 year old blonde girl that keeps teasing you, you gotta do it.

Save the cortisol loading for weight training lol

Just walk. It (and moderate cycling) should be 80% of your exercise.

I get 4-5 hours a week total, but I’m retired with a new knee.

With the heat of summer, it’s best to get walking done in the early morning. It’s kind of a magical time to walk, anyway!

Gettysburg ? Lol. Good luck, you’ll never see a confederate battle flag. Its like the union troops fought a faceless, country less foe. I’ve been there 3-4 times. The last time was 6-7 years ago. Its a liberal wet dream. Confederate flags are banned. Its not a battle field so much as a tour of where the union held off the damn south.

I just finished building a 315 foot fence along my back property line. That was my workout routine during the course of the project!

The rest of the story is that she simply spent all day in her garden working. That was her hobby that took 8 hours of her day to do.

My grandfather was the same way. He kept a half-acre garden and just left the vegetables, that he didn’t use, at the end of the driveway for anybody who wanted to take it home.
