Chicago Tribune gives NYC stark warning on electing a socialist mayor like Zohran Mamdani: ‘The ending isn’t pretty’

The Chicago Tribune issued a grim warning to New Yorkers about electing a socialist mayoral candidate like Zohran Mamdani in a bombshell op-ed Monday, the day before the Empire State’s primary elections.

The paper’s editorial board paints a bleak image of Mamdani, the 33-year-old Democratic socialist Queens assemblyman who leapfrogged longtime frontrunner, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in a stunning new poll released earlier in the day.

“A familiar dilemma: a moderate, business-friendly Democrat versus a democratic socialist. New Yorkers, take it from Chicago — we’ve seen this movie before, and the ending isn’t pretty,” the board of one of the last remaining big-city daily newspapers cautioned.

The Tribune likened Mamdani’s buzz-worthy campaign, which has garnered a historic amount of grassroots support, to that of embattled progressive Windy City Mayor Brandon Johnson, whose took office in 2023.

“Johnson’s approval rating cratered in his second year — a reflection of how quickly progressive promises collapsed under the weight of governance and Chicago’s financial reality,” the paper wrote. “What sounded good in theory has translated into dysfunction, driven by fiscal missteps and political inexperience.

“Johnson is one of the most progressive mayors in the U.S., but Mamdani, inarguably, is yet more radical,” it continued.

The outlet pointed out that many of Mamdani’s ideas — such as rent freezes, city-operated supermarkets and free transit — are “shared (at least in principle) by Mayor Brandon Johnson, and many of them are popular in blue cities.”

Wow...isn’t that heresy? Are NY’ers that stupid to nominate such an obvious idiot?
[Well, duh...they vote for AOC...]

If it does happen and God forbid he wins, I hope federal dollars do not bail their azzes out...

I learned a long time ago from W.C. Fields that “There’s no such thing as a free lunch”. You pay for it one way or another and usually you pay much more.

The Trib helped give us Obama, by (among many other things) destroying his opponent in an Illinois Senate race, Jack Ryan - it would’ve been nice if they’d pulled their collective head out of their collective posterior several decades ago.

I don’t believe it.

See: pol in Texas, I believe, who faked hate crimes to drum up anger and support for his campaign while stifling his opponents.

The NY Post editorial board can have their columnists write all they want about this latest impending disaster in NYC, but it's the editorial board that is front and center for blame because four years ago they endorsed the current failed mayor, Eric Adams, over Curtis Sliwa.
From their Oct. 21, 2021 endorsement:

With all due respect to GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa, Eric Adams remains our choice for mayor. He’s simply far better suited to do what they both agree is Job No. 1: Get on top of the crime and public disorder plaguing New York.

He’s also better equipped to lead the fightback against the other issues afflicting this great city post-pandemic: Get businesses reopened, get commuters and tourists back . . . and keep them back.

Part of his advantage is simply that he’s a Democrat and, yes, a black man and former cop with a strong record of demanding police reform. That (and his years as a state senator) makes him far more able to wrestle the City Council and Legislature into repealing or repairing the no-bail madness and other recent laws that make crime-fighting so much harder.

More, he represents the promise of dragging the entire local Democratic Party back to sanity. He’s been polite in his disagreements with the AOC/de Blasio wing — but crucially definitive not just on crime but also on the city’s need to keep its high-end taxpayers and to nurture businesses large and small.

Sliwa’s decades of volunteer service to the city command respect: He plainly loves this town, and his large heart is in the right place.

But it’s easy for a Republican to be tough on crime: Adams faced down the left on the issue in the Democratic primary and beat it — proving to the whole party that “their” voters demand an end to the bloodshed, fear and chaos.

He offers sanity on other fronts, too: truly supporting charter schools, for one, as well as preserving and expanding today’s Gifted & Talented programs in the regular public system.

Everything the NY Post editorial board said would happen with Adams went the opposite way. Now they're panicking that it's really going to get bad meaning it's going to get bad for them personally. Gee, no kidding.

Election fraud is likely to play a big role in this election.

Prayers up!

It’s not a matter now if NYC *deserves* it. There are many there who don’t and oppose this. The bigger concern it that it sets a very dangerous step in the muslim takeover of the US.

stars&stripes forever, courtesy ping for your consideration.

Islam is incompatible with the U.S. Constitution.

Obama declared it shared America’s history. What he didn’t say was they were the Barberry pirates who were pillaging the trade route.

Thomas Jefferson reported they should never live here.

The Chicago Tribune is right. And New Yorkers are going to vote for the Socialist anyway. And then get mad next year when Paradise doesn’t materialize and they are living in Hell instead.

Don’t underestimate younger voters’ desire to get back at the evil boomers - they may know full well what Mamdani is and vote for him anyway, to spite Dad.

Tried rent freezes. Result: no middle class housing in NYC.

City-operated supermarkets. Result: When have you been happy with anything run by the gov't?

Free transit. Result: When has "free" anything worked? Any time something is "free", it is over-consumed. You think subways are crowded now? Just wait...
