0:00·today let's explore the fascinating site
0:02·of ancient Carzela in Umbria on the
0:05·occasion of new ongoing excavations on
0:08·site that ancient Rome live was invited
0:10·to observe and share it's an important
0:13·investigation of an Umbrian town where
0:16·one of ancient Rome's most famous roads
0:18·the Vaflammenia
0:20·ran right through it we're just 65 miles
0:23·north of ancient Rome in the Umbrian
0:26·region along the Vaflammenia which was
0:28·Rome's great road emanating due north
0:31·from the capital which headed all the
0:34·way to the Adriatic and Remany i'm
0:37·walking down the Via Flaminia
0:41·there is one of two quadrifons arches
0:43·that would lead you into and up the
0:46·forum of Kulai so literally the city is
0:52·bisected by the Vaflamia so we're
0:54·talking about one of the most important
0:55·roads for Romans emanating out of the
0:59·imperial capital also in the Republican
1:02·times this is an important road heading
1:05·north through Umbria so we have a
1:08·construction about 220 BC and with that
1:12·construction you're going to have some
1:15·Umbrian towns that are connected to it
1:18·but you also have the construction due
1:20·to the road of new cities and Karisai is
1:23·one of those new cities it's fabulous
1:26·it's wonderful and you have today
1:28·ongoing excavations and what they're
1:31·principally looking at is the late
1:33·Republican remains of the town and then
1:36·you have a moment of monumentalization
1:41·under the emperors so we think about how
1:44·the prominence of this road is going to
1:46·go up and up and up over time in fact
1:49·just beyond us here beyond the city
1:51·limits there is a monumental triple arch
1:54·dating to the time of Trajan once lined
1:56·with marble so this is part of that
2:00·monumental thoroughare like the via
2:04·on which the emperor would traverse you
2:06·have the successful armies coming into
2:09·Rome for the celebration of a triumph
2:11·this was a major artery into the city
2:14·and you can get a sense of that
2:15·prominence particularly we know in two
2:18·grand moments in the imperial period one
2:21·under Augustus so Tonius tells us he's
2:24·going to be putting a lot of effort and
2:26·construction into the management of the
2:31·Via Flaminia and then you're going to
2:33·have it again under the Flavians
2:37·and so with that intervention on the
2:40·part of two powerhouse emperors you're
2:43·also going to have monumentality here in
2:45·the city the via Flammenia was created
2:47·in 220 BC by the sensor gas flaminius
2:52·although there were local settlements in
2:53·the area in the bronze age with Umbrian
2:56·presence the real city center of Carzeli
2:59·was created only with the construction
3:01·of the road this brought locals in
3:03·direct contact with Rome and facilitated
3:06·trade the location was ideal nearby
3:09·natural thermal springs and in fact the
3:13·later city that flourished after the
3:14·civil wars under Augustus didn't have
3:17·any true defensive wall a testament to
3:20·the staying power of Imperial Rome it
3:22·was more than anything a trading post a
3:25·meeting point both for travelers and
3:27·Roman armies as well as merchants
3:30·trading oil grain and wool the city's
3:33·real development took place under
3:34·Augustus coinciding with the entire
3:37·Vaflammenia circuits renewal and
3:39·expansion it's in the 1st century BC and
3:41·1st century AD that we can probably
3:44·attribute the forum partially elevated
3:46·on a terrace the basilica
3:49·and theater and by the end of the 1st
3:52·century AD the amphitheater there was
3:55·also the construction of building in the
3:56·forum area dedicated to the imperial
3:58·cult as witnessed by the recovery of
4:01·colossal statuary including the head and
4:04·torso of Claudius so it was a possible
4:07·Augustinam structure the Vflaminia
4:09·literally passes through the heart of
4:11·the Umbrian city let's take a walk along
4:13·it and visit outside the city limits i'm
4:17·walking along a magnificent stretch of
4:19·the Via Flammenia
4:22·and when you're outside the city walking
4:24·towards the town you're greeted by this
4:26·once triple arch which we can see was in
4:30·the interior inlaid with marble you have
4:33·the holes for the metal clamps and
4:36·beyond it you're leaving outside the
4:38·city and what do you do outside the city
4:41·you bury the dead and some of the most
4:43·prominent tombs are going to be located
4:45·along the important gates of the city so
4:48·here you have one massive rotunda here
4:51·attributed to the gains furya and there
4:54·are many other tomb remains outside of
4:58·karai but it's really impressive to see
5:00·this town this town that didn't have any
5:02·walls but its real claim to fame and its
5:06·success
5:07·was being located along the viaammenia
5:11·and when we think about the via
5:12·flammenia we've got to think about one
5:14·of the most important roads for the
5:16·Romans maybe the most important after
5:19·the via Apapia and you have so much of
5:22·it preserved in the archaeological site
5:24·of Karalai Caruli that today is still
5:28·being excavated and we'll take a look at
5:30·some of those ongoing excavations to
5:32·learn a more about the rich history of
5:35·the city between the republic and the
5:37·imperial periods now let's tour the city
5:40·and its key monuments keeping in mind
5:42·that it was a small town of about 50
5:44·acres and a maximum population of 3 to
5:48·5,000 inside the city we have the road
5:51·bisecting the forum and Basilica or
5:53·Lockwart here's the small theater with a
5:56·diameter of 62 m nearby there's a column
6:01·hall where today late antique tombs are
6:05·being excavated
6:07·next to the theater there is the
6:08·imposing amphitheater constructed in a
6:11·natural depression it probably dates the
6:13·Flavian period and its dimensions are
6:16·86x 66 m with an arena of 50x 30 m
6:22·accommodating a couple thousand
6:25·spectators now let's look at the new
6:27·excavations there are exciting
6:29·discoveries that are rewriting the
6:30·history of the site there are two main
6:33·areas of excavation one is here a newly
6:37·revealed pair of structures off the
6:39·central forum area mainly spoliated but
6:42·with large column fragments and
6:44·impressive bases was it a public hall or
6:48·was it used for religious activity was
6:50·it a colleague or an association a few
6:54·buildings further away was that
6:56·Augustinam cult structure with the
6:57·colossal statuary so although we don't
6:59·understand yet the true nature of these
7:02·new buildings being investigated the
7:04·excavation will continue to resolve
7:07·issues and shed new light on the
7:10·original use of the structures
7:13·in the central area of the forum there
7:16·has been the recent discovery of what
7:18·might be the municipal building or do
7:20·publica of the elected officials that's
7:23·how the excavators have been calling it
7:25·it's also known as the do of the mosaic
7:28·the mosaic which is currently covered
7:31·but beyond it on the far side of the
7:34·terrace forum is a connected monumental
7:36·structure which has recently been
7:39·excavated it is a large impressive nyam
7:43·or fountain that was once fronted by a
7:46·portico you can see the recently
7:49·excavated column bases this was directly
7:52·connected to its waterways the lead
7:54·pipes to the structures of the so-called
7:56·Domos Publica so it seems then that the
7:59·Domos Publica structure and the Nefam
8:01·were directly related if not
8:04·contemporary one with the other more
8:07·details are to be revealed as the
8:08·investigations continue what happened to
8:11·Caruli in the end it was not a walled
8:13·city so when the lands were uncertain
8:15·and times were uncertain and particular
8:17·at the end of late antiquity as new
8:19·invaders settled in Italy other nearby
8:21·cities became more favored spoladum for
8:24·example which were more fortified and
8:27·resisted marauding armies and briggins
8:30·carelai was largely pillaged for
8:31·building material still life continued
8:33·along the via Flammenia eventually a
8:35·well-worn pilgrimage route to Rome it
8:37·eventually led to the spoliated use of a
8:39·standing structure right here which was
8:41·converted into a church of St and Cosma
8:43·and Damiano in the sixth century later
8:45·restructured in the 11th century whose
8:48·interior medieval fresco are partially
8:50·preserved the city was first
8:52·investigated by the Chesy family in the
8:54·17th century followed by papal
8:56·excavations in the 18th century finally
8:59·giving way to national excavations in
9:01·the 1950s and the creation of an
9:03·archaeological park in more recent
9:05·decades there have been international
9:07·collaborations and there's now a more
9:09·considerate effort led by the
9:11·archaeological park of Karalai itself
9:12·and its partners so we can look forward
9:15·to more discoveries and efforts to make
9:17·the site more accessible and unraveling
9:20·the long history of Karalai along the
9:23·Via Flaminia we'd like to thank Muza
9:25·National Peruja the regional direction
9:28·of the national museums of Umbria
9:30·archaeologists Masumiano Gasperini Luca
9:33·Donin and Valerio Keraluche
9:37·Associon Astra Unlas the Archaeological
9:40·Park of Careli and the Ministry of
9:42·Culture for permission to film the site
9:46·as the excavations took place thanks for
9:49·watching Ancient Rome Live thanks for
9:51·liking and subscribing and we'll see you
9:53·somewhere in the Roman Empire

The Via Flaminia is named for Gaius Flaminius (consul for the first time in 223, censor in 220, consul for the second time in 217, killed in the battle of Lake Trasimene in 217). The road was named for him because he was censor when it was started. The ancient literary tradition about him is very hostile because he was seen as an enemy of the Senatorial nobility.
