Israel needs a 15-ton ‘bunker buster’ bomb to destroy the last untouched nuclear facility in Iran, but only the US has one.
Such a powerful weapon – the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal – is needed because the target, Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, is built some 300 feet inside a mountain near the city of Qom, two hours south of Tehran.
The heavyweight explosive is known as a GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator and was designed by Boeing for the United States Air Force.
Its huge weight means it can only be delivered with a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber – a jet Israel’s air force does not possess.

“By weight and kinetic force, the GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator is designed to penetrate a certain amount of distance into the ground before it blows,” said Spencer.
“That’s why these bunker busters are called Penetrators. They penetrate the ground before they explode. The explosion is strategically delayed.”

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Why not put wings and a tail on the bomb and tow it to the target?
I say we sell Israel a couple of B-2 Stealth’s and MOP’s and let them do the dirty work.
Leave Fordow untouched and make a museum out if it. The islamist thugocracy in Tehran will collapse in a minute.
Why have they not bought one yet?
Seems like it would have been obvious it needed one for a while now.
I would not be surprised, at all, if the bomb is dropped by a Boeing 777F or a 747-8F Freighter, heavily modified by Israel.
Or just rent them a couple for a month.
Sure, when they get there, they can arm the bomb, ring the doorbell, and run like the dickens.
They tried, kind of.
They’re not for sale, just like the F22.
I think turning it into a big glide bomb would work, but I’m no kind of engineer let alone an aeronautical one.
Or just write us a purchase order for “One MOP, delivered to address below”.
Simple transaction. Art of the deal.
They knew they were building these fortified deep bunkers years ago. Why didn’t Israel prepare for that or hit them in the process of development?
“Why not put wings and a tail on the bomb and tow it to the target?”
Or maybe they’ve built a huge drone.
Israel is, by far, the leader in drones. The Predator (just for example) was an Israeli design, finalized by an Israeli who moved to the USA.
The angle of attack would be wrong for penetration, unless it dove in. It needs to be dropped from something like 50,000 feet to achieve sufficient velocity.
Consistent US pressure.
Yank a cable and make the wings drop off. That should put it on target if their math is right.

“””Israel needs a 15-ton ‘bunker buster’ bomb to destroy the last untouched nuclear facility in Iran, but only the US has one.”””
This opening statement by NYP presumes a bunker buster is the absolute only way to destroy the last nuclear facility.
Well, Israel has shown themselves to be more clever than the writers at NYP.
I could envision a truck laden with explosives being driven into that mountain tunnel.
Compute the probable volume of the underground complex...
Compute the amount of air the hundreds or thousands of workers require to survive...
Seal all surface accesses to the underground facility, leaving redesigned accesses that would allow either air evacuation or poison gas injection...
Destroy all water and power entry points on the surface...
Sit back and wait...
