SCDOT reopens Interstate 20 in Aiken County within 36 hours after Bridge Strike and Fire
SCDOT Press Release ^ | June 16 2025 | SC DOT

Just 36 hours after the initial impact to the overpass, SCDOT has reopened traffic on I-20 in both directions at mile marker 13 in Aiken County.

South Carolina Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said, "I want to thank our crews, our contractors and our partners in law enforcement for working around the clock on this major emergency response effort. Thanks to their immediate mobilization and diligent work, we opened the interstate in a record amount of time."

The bridge on Old Vaucluse Road was a total loss following a bridge strike and fire and now SCDOT will begin expediting a bridge replacement plan. In the meantime, the interstate is fully reopened and traffic is moving.

Drivers in the area should continue to travel with caution as crews will continue to work to remove traffic control devices along the detour routes.

Looks like SC DOT cleaned up the loss of a bridge collision within two days, and reopened I20 to traffic.

Compare and contrast with the clown show in Providence RI on the (much more trafficked) I95 bridge replacement.

"...the first time in history, steel was melted by fire. It is physically impossible." --Rosie O'Donnell

I guess this is the second time in history.
