Iranian citizen reveals why Islamic rulers built no shelters for airstrikes: ‘Culture of martyrdom’
NY Post ^ | 6/15/25 | Ronny Reyes

An Iranian citizen claims the Islamic Republic didn’t build shelters for airstrikes because residents are expected to tough through the bombings and “enjoy martyrdom.”

While Israelis have a plethora of public bomb shelters to help weather the storm of attacks from Tehran, Iranians claim that not only is their infrastructure lacking, but there is also a “culture of martyrdom” that keeps them from seeking refuge.

“In this society, going to the shelters when there is a jet fighting or looming [airstrike] around it indicates you’re chicken-hearted,” an Iranian journalist told the BBC’s Global News Podcast. “So you should [be] brave and brace for the bombardments and enjoy martyrdom.”

To this point, Iran has yet to officially shut down any businesses despite the escalating attacks from Israel and Tehran officials repeatedly stating that the nation is at war.

The reporter, speaking under the condition of anonymity, said the best people can hope for is to hide in their own basements due to the lack of public shelters.

People also have the option of hiding out in Tehran’s subways, “but subways are not open to the people after 10:30 [p.m.],” the journalist pointed out.

The problem goes further as citizens in Tehran told the British outlet that they’re still expected to commute to work amid the attacks between Israel and Iran, with many people having no idea where and when the attacks will come.

That's a shame.

I think the theocratic Iranian rulers are in special deluxe bunkers as envisioned in Dr. Strangelove. To carry on the Iranian greatness after the lowly common people are killed.

They say large amounts of refined radioactive materials nearly ready for nuclear bomb grade are well underground, some under a mountain reachable only by tunnels.

A luxury refuge for the bosses probably has a similar place or two.

I wonder how they feel about many of the Iranian Leaders who are still alive fleeing the country, instead of embracing martyrdom.

No shelters for civilians because the West doesn’t target civilians like the other side does.

Typical for leftist leaders.

The hoi polloi are just fodder for their wars.

If someone was highly interested in the longitude/ latitude of that particular mountain range now storing radioactive materials, Google Earth probably already has a clear and crisp photo gallery of the location. There might even be a pinpoint pic of the Ayatollah himself, gregariously waving at the Google Drones. (okay-Sarc!)

Personally, I’m not near techy enough to locate it, or War-Hound-ish enough to care.
Some people, especially men, are fascinated about the gilded tools of making War.

I think it is more a culture of being able to advertise the mayhem. These people use children, women, sick (hospitals) as human shields. They like that evil as part of their brand. mostly cause the are demonic.

Think about this: the leaders of Iran have an Arab world view, and Arab way of thinking. But Iran/Persia has a very different culture, older and more developed. So, the leaders are not in tune with their land or their people.

Keep in mind this is the country that sent kids on mopeds to clear minefields during the Iran-Iraq war; they were all given a luck charm .... which must have been a big comfort.

Actually their religion states that if there is enough blood, the 12th Imam will climb out out the Well in went into in 850 AD and lead the forces of Islam to kill off the entire human race, thereby bringing every one to Paradise.

So after all the civilians are martyred, the Mad Mullahs will be able to fight alongside the 12th Imam - the glory they will achieve will earn them a special place in Paradise next to Mohammad.

That is their fervent belief - survival is only a way to get the 12th Imam to bless them. That’s why they want nukes - the more death, the more blood the better. And that’s why they are called the Mad Mullahs.

The Mad Mullahs are neither Left nor Right. They are religious fanatics of the worst sort, the worst imaginable.

No the do not; they are religious fanatics of the worst sort imaginable. They are not Arabs to begin with - they are Persians. They have done everything they can to suppress the old culture. They are not in tune with reality. They are insane.

You need to read more closely. I talked about Persia. I said the leaders in Iran have an Arab mindset, not a Persian one. Persia has a sophisticated, ancient culture.

This thread is an interesting discussion of shelters in case of airstrikes.

OK, so Iran has few if any at all for the civilian populace.

Now something a little more concerning, is where are our bomb shelters? Is this a paranoid stupid question? If I chose to build one, such as what was done in the 50’s, I’d be the laughing stock of the community.

If war does come, we are so screwed.

No they have a Persian mindset & this is the Persian version of your precious Arab mindset. I had this same conversion with 2 Iranian expats decades ago [ both fought the take over and lived in caves until they could flee - both now passed on ]. And that was their take on the Mad Mullahs, and how they think.

Please...
Israel is conduction precision strikes. Civilian causalities are minimal.

Iran is just lobbing bombs into cities knowing full well that most causalities will be civilian.
Heck, they’re even hitting muslim communities.

It’s easy to not be too worried when your enemy is good at hitting the targets only.
