The junk readings from 80%+ are due to laziness and corruption of the commie trash in charge.

Thermometers are not supposed to be within 300 yards of any obstruction that could block or stagnate wind — this causes heat to accumulate. The folks knew this dating back decades but since the corrupt readings served their purposes, they ignored. This is the source of almost all ground temp increases.
Why are therms within 300 yards? ‘Cause they installed them decades ago and civilization expands — wow, go figgur.

For some inexplicable reason, despite playing a significant role in WMO deliberations, the UK Met Office does not appear to want to follow this sensible scientific advice.

Highly explicable.

Per your comments later in the thread:

I'm just a layman w/regard to gathering weather statistics; however, does it not seem illogical to gather weather statistics at large airports; which appear to me to be wide-open, large, concrete “heat islands” w/large jet aircraft regularly coming and going 24/7?

(Particularly when the aforementioned statistics from these locations are frequently compared w/weather statistics gathered from other locales before airplanes of any type even existed.)

Good article, analyzing measurement issues including the heat island effect.
