The company I work for makes temperature & dew point sensors for the FAA used at practically every airport in the country.
They are so sensitive that just walking up to them will cause a spike momentarily...................

These are state of the art thermometers by Dominion and Smartmatic systems.

My guess is a bird landed on or even a human smoking a cigarette leaning up against the pole mounted sensor caused the spikes..........

The junk readings from 80%+ are due to laziness and corruption of the commie trash in charge.
Thermometers are not supposed to be within 300 yards of any obstruction that could block or stagnate wind — this causes heat to accumulate. The folks knew this dating back decades but since the corrupt readings served their purposes, they ignored. This is the source of almost all ground temp increases.
Why are therms within 300 yards? ‘Cause they installed them decades ago and civilization expands — wow, go figgur.

For some inexplicable reason, despite playing a significant role in WMO deliberations, the UK Met Office does not appear to want to follow this sensible scientific advice. Highly explicable.

Per your comments later in the thread:
I'm just a layman w/regard to gathering weather statistics; however, does it not seem illogical to gather weather statistics at large airports; which appear to me to be wide-open, large, concrete “heat islands” w/large jet aircraft regularly coming and going 24/7?
(Particularly when the aforementioned statistics from these locations are frequently compared w/weather statistics gathered from other locales before airplanes of any type even existed.)

You are correct, but the FAA has specifications as to where and how these sensors are located.
But whether or not the actually are is a whole different matter.
I have seen them located in places that defy sanity.
One was located near an HVAC unit, another near a trash barrel where paper is burned.
Bureaucrats make rules then do not follow them................

which appear to me to be wide-open, large, concrete “heat islands” Take a look at various large commercial airports on Google Earth. Some are almost all pavement (LAX, JFK for example) others are very open (IAD, DEN for example).

This might possibly have some effect on a high rate, high sensitivity weather station ...
