World fertility rates in 'unprecedented decline', UN says

The agency has taken its strongest line yet on fertility decline, warning that hundreds of millions of people are not able to have the number of children they want, citing the prohibitive cost of parenthood and the lack of a suitable partner as some of the reasons.

UNFPA surveyed 14,000 people in 14 countries about their fertility intentions. One in five said they haven't had or expect they won't have their desired number of children.

The countries surveyed - South Korea, Thailand, Italy, Hungary, Germany, Sweden, Brazil, Mexico, US, India, Indonesia, Morocco, South Africa, and Nigeria - account for a third of the global population.

They are a mix of low, middle and high-income countries and those with low and high fertility. UNFPA surveyed young adults and those past their reproductive years.

The survey, which is a pilot for research in 50 countries later this year, is limited in its scope. When it comes to age groups within countries for example, the sample sizes are too small to make conclusions.

But some findings are clear.

In all countries, 39% of people said financial limitations prevented them from having a child.

The highest response was in Korea (58%), the lowest in Sweden (19%).

UNFPA is urging caution in response to low fertility.

"Right now, what we're seeing is a lot of rhetoric of catastrophe, either overpopulation or shrinking population, which leads to this kind of exaggerated response, and sometimes a manipulative response," says Dr Kanem.

"In terms of trying to get women to have more children, or fewer."

She points out that 40 years ago China, Korea, Japan, Thailand and Turkey were all worried their populations were too high. By 2015 they wanted to boost fertility.

Yes, that will make it even worse.
However, it started long before Covid-19.

Japan has millions of empty houses. They do not allow immigration.

South Korea has one of the worst aging population.

Italy is literally selling homes for $1Euro in a lot of the smaller rural villages. I subscribe to a couple YouTube realtor Italy channels. Even in Tuscany you can buy estates for less than HALF the price they were once worth. No, you will not find any deals on the Amalfi coast.

China recently admitted that their population dropped from 1.5 Billion to 1.4 Billion. That .1 is 100 million less Chinamen. Also, they are mostly MEN. The One Child Policy has left China with MILLIONS of young men who will NEVER have a wife. There are just not enough to go around.

Everyone is now raising dogs instead of having kids. I see it all over the place. In 50 years, there will be a lot of sad, pathetic old people who have no one to visit them.

With a majority of their marriageable young men being gone at the hands of the Russian invaders, those lovely Ukrainian girls who seem to find my inbox should start advertising in China.

Perhaps. But its hard to have too much sympathy. In China (and much of East Asia), a woman who is 27 or older is considered too old to marry. Personally, I think women aged 27-32 are still in their prime.

Decades ago, I read forecasts predicting that world population growth would reverse around the year 2030. It was considered a good thing, considering the alternative.

Japan should stick to this policy. I think mass migration will only increase their problems while providing no real benefits. Their population might indeed increase, but it won’t be due to native Japanese.

I don’t think those Chinese men have the same access to the internet that we do here in the USA. If they did, I am sure that those “Ukrainian” ladies would be advertising to them too!

Pretty sure it also hits Muslim countries, but so far much less hard than the West and East Asia.

Right now, I think SubSaharan Africa has the only nations well above the replacement rate. And even there, the birthrates are declining.

I do agree that a stable population of 1B or so humans might be better for the planet. But there are lots of Leftists who are outright rooting for total human extinction.

Isn’t that what the U.N. wanted? These liberally oriented troupes never remember what their goals were, so that they are not blamed for their mistakes, which are numerous..

I tend to agree with those who believe China has far, far less than 1.4 billion people. But then again, China wouldn’t lie about anything...would they?
