“60 Minutes” correspondent Scott Pelley spoke out about President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against CBS and its parent company on Saturday, arguing that a settlement would be “very damaging.”
“Well, it’d be very damaging to CBS, to Paramount, to the reputation of those companies,” Pelley said during a conversation with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Saturday, who asked how harmful a settlement and potential apology would be to the network.
Trump filed a lawsuit against Paramount Global, CBS News’ parent company, over a “60 Minutes” interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris in October 2024.
Fox News Digital confirmed that Trump rejected a $15 million offer to settle his lawsuit, according to a source familiar with the matter, as the president’s legal team is also demanding at least $25 million and an apology from CBS News.
Cooper, who is also a correspondent on “60 Minutes,” also asked Pelley about former show producer Bill Owens resigning from the program in April.
“Bill‘s decision to resign may not have been much of a decision for him because he was always the first person to defend the independence of ‘60 minutes.’ Bill didn‘t work for Paramount. Bill worked for our viewers, and he felt very keenly about that. And so I‘m not sure Bill had any choice, once the corporation began to meddle in Bill‘s decisions about the editorial content, or just place pressure in that area, Bill felt that he didn‘t have the independence that honest journalism requires,” Pelley said.
Pelley also said he wished he had the public backing of CBS News, but added that his work was still making it onto the program.

Not to Donald J. Trump!
We can do better than that.
They should have thought of that when they liable him.

“Well, it’d be very damaging to CBS, to Paramount, to the reputation of those companies”
I agree with Scott, but does anyone here know the REAL REASON that it would be very damaging? I do.
Well, it’s not his money.
Exactly what rules do these networks want to operate under? That they’re free to libel people?
“Damaging” to whom, exactly? Any settlement less than a billion and CBS is back to business as usual with all other mainstream outlets acting as if nothing happened.
Scott hasnt realized years and years of biased fake news has damaged CBS more than any lawsuit ever could. Nobody watches, nobody cares…. All journalistic integrity is gone Scott… yours included. Overpaid propagandists have become irrelevant. A large settlement with a larger mea culpa with some action to fix this all out assault on Trump is the only thing that can reverse it. The audience will probably only get the settlement.
I hope not. Add at least another zero.
I don’t think Pelley gets it....if they go to the bitter end, and Trump just gets a quarter of what he wanted...that’s $5-billion. So if you can get the lawyers to agree on something in the $100-million to $200-million range...that’s a ‘win’ for CBS.
At the end of this...I think 60 Minutes is finished.
“the REAL REASON that it would be very damaging? I do.”
What’s the real reason?
Damaging?
Umm… That’s the point, Scott.
Talk about being slow on the uptake.
If Skydance has any brains, after the merger CBS News is finished.
From a few days ago, pay attention to the bit about the $400 mil breakup penalty...

Really, 2 reasons.
Post #7 (which I read after posting) mentioned Discovery. That could get very interesting.
My thought is based on my (old) parents. They are GLUED to Western Media and Western Media can do no wrong as far as they’re concerned. I suspect there are another 40 million Americans like them. Obviously, part of any settlement will be for CBS to admit they defrauded their viewers, which could then be used against them and the other networks, on just about any story (like how the networks discount the real causes of the Ukraine Invasion, for example - to the point of most Americans being absolutely clueless).
They fear that losing credibility with their 40 million viewers will result in their loss of political power - which is their ENTIRE REASON for going into that profession (at least according to Rush, which I agree with).
Discovery is what would be “very damaging.”
