The former police chief, convicted murderer and rapist dubbed the “Devil in the Ozarks,” was nabbed less than two miles from the Arkansas prison he escaped two weeks ago, authorities said Friday.
Grant Hardin, 56, has evaded capture since walking out of Calico Rock prison on May 25 — despite searchers employing bloodhounds, officers on horseback, drones, helicopters and an elite US Border Patrol team.
“Escapee Grant Hardin was captured this afternoon approximately 1.5 miles west of the prison grounds by law enforcement officials,” the Izard County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook.
“His identity was confirmed by fingerprint analysis prior to this announcement notifying the public.”
The highly trained Border Patrol Tactical Team, or BORTAC, provided “advanced search capabilities and operational support” to authorities in the search for Hardin, US Customs and Border Protection said.
Its members are accustomed to navigating complex terrain, including the Ozark Mountains region Hardin escaped to.
The killer was a police chief in a quiet town near the Arkansas-Missouri border until he raped and killed a local elementary school teacher in 1997. His crimes were later portrayed in the TV documentary “Devil in the Ozarks.

It makes a certain level of sense to stay near the prison, because who would look near the prison, when the thought would be that he would try and get away?
Inconceivable!
Or he was boxed in and couldn’t get away..
What, how did he eat? That scruff doesn’t look like an almost two week beard either,
A few articles suggested he has outdoor knowledge. Also if you look at his escape picture, there was a box on the push cart. There may have been some supplies in the box.
No mention as to where exactly he was caught.
Could be
I’ve read articles suggesting he was caught west or north of the prison. One article suggested he was caught near Moccasin Creek. The creek runs east/west west of the prison and north/south north of the prison. One of the articles said dogs picked up his scent..
So the next question.
Who sent a murderous lifer to a medium security prison prison?
They need to pay for the costs for the search.
From the article:
“Hardin was housed in a maximum-security wing of the primarily medium security prison, formally known as the North Central Unit. Officials are investigating whether a job Hardin held in the kitchen helped in his escape, including whether it gave him access to materials he could have used to fashion his makeshift uniform.”
This theory has been floated.. d;^)
I should have been clearer. Was he found in a garage, a shed, someone’s home, in the woods or walking down a road?
In the woods.
“They need to pay for the costs of the search”
Yes, and we get to pay for his food, housing, medical needs, etc., etc. until he dies. It’s too bad this POS can’t be executed for what he did to an innocent woman.
I agree.
POS has won the consolation prize. He will spend the rest of his days in the Arkansas SuperMax prison. It appears he had a few privileges at the place he escaped from...
he weighed 250 when he escaped; based on before and after pics, looks like he lost some of that excess weight ...
GREAT!
