Hegseth orders name of gay rights activist Harvey Milk scrubbed from Navy ship — vessels honoring Harriet Tubman and Ruth Bader Ginsburg could be next

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the Navy to review the names of several ships honoring the likes of slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk, abolitionist Harriet Tubman and late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, according to multiple reports.

Navy Secretary John Phelan indicated in an internal memo obtained by CBS News that the name review is aimed at “reestablishing the warrior culture” in the military, a priority of the Trump administration.

“Secretary Hegseth is committed to ensuring that the names attached to all [Department of Defense] installations and assets are reflective of the Commander-in-Chief’s priorities, our nation’s history, and the warrior ethos,” Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.

“Any potential renaming(s) will be announced after internal reviews are complete,” he added. The small team Phelan has assembled to go over potential name changes is expected to announce a new moniker for the USNS Harvey Milk – a replenishment oiler – by the end of June, gay pride month, according to the Associated Press.

Good, our ships should be named after war heroes and presidents.

I'm partial to famous sea battles, as well. I was a Plankowner on the USS Leyte Gulf, CG-55, though this ship was decommissioned last year.

Harriet Tubman was very much a warrior in many ways, without wearing a uniform as such. She expressed great commitment of purpose, courage, sacrifice, leadership and tenacity as much as any warrior is expected to do. She made the human war against slavery her own. Any American military item is worthy of her spirit.

“No reason at all to name a Navy ship after Ruth Bader Ginsburg”
Nothing strikes fear in our enemies like a 90-lb, octogenarian Jewish granny.

Most people serve honorably. In Carter’s case, his later service to the country was nothing to feel inspired by. Democrats were desperate to reconnect the military and their votes, so it was all just pandering to name a ship after a sailor who did nothing heroic or inspirational (at least, that I’ve ever heard of) during his service. I would not want a ship named after Pres. Trump either. This is not about partisanship. There are many, many war heroes whose names deserve recognition and whose names would give those on the ship a sense of pride.

There was a tradition in the US Navy for naming warships after Native American chiefs e.g. the USS Tecumseh. I would suggest the tradition continue with naming a Navy warship the USS Crazy Horse in honor of the Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse.

In Ancient Rome, public buildings had the letters SPQR, usually carved into the front overhead entrance.

It stood for SENATUS POPULUS QUE ROMANUS , translated it meant IN THE NAME OF THE SENATE AND THE PEOPLE OF ROME.

Our government was designed to follow the example of Ancient Rome, including the Capitol Building, named after the Capitoline Hill in Rome.

We should follow their example in more ways than this, and stop glorifying politicians who more often than not cause more problems than they solve.

I doubt the women’s names will be removed, but that would be okay of they did. The Navy should not be the Left’s virtue signaling paradise.

Actually spelled Rodger Young. Died in the Solomon Islands and indeed a real American Hero. Harvey Silk? Died an advocate for homosexualism and was a major influence on Gays in San Francisco. He died for his sexual beliefs. Rodger Young died for his fellow soldiers and saved many lives, while Milk helped many San Franciscan Gays destroy themselves. I applaud Hegseth for this move.

Exactly, name ships after Navy and Marine heroes, or cities and states. I’d include presidents but they’d name the next one the USS Biden.

The Founders fought a war to get rid of a king. And now we treat our presidents as if they were kings. Flags at half-staff for a whole month when they die, Hail to the Chief, etc.

And also naming ships after them.
It’s ridiculous.

Amen to that and I think that’s what Pete is rectifying.

Eventually there will be a USS Barak Obama and a USS Joseph Biden, but I don’t think that there will ever be a USS Donald Trump. The country led by the media would go crazy if even a canoe was named for Trump.
