Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the Navy to review the names of several ships honoring the likes of slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk, abolitionist Harriet Tubman and late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, according to multiple reports.
Navy Secretary John Phelan indicated in an internal memo obtained by CBS News that the name review is aimed at “reestablishing the warrior culture” in the military, a priority of the Trump administration.
“Secretary Hegseth is committed to ensuring that the names attached to all [Department of Defense] installations and assets are reflective of the Commander-in-Chief’s priorities, our nation’s history, and the warrior ethos,” Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.
“Any potential renaming(s) will be announced after internal reviews are complete,” he added. The small team Phelan has assembled to go over potential name changes is expected to announce a new moniker for the USNS Harvey Milk – a replenishment oiler – by the end of June, gay pride month, according to the Associated Press.

PERFECT!
Should be reserved for Naval and Marine heroes when they want to name a vessel after a person.
Harriet Tubman and Ruth Bader Ginsburg could be next.
Were they pervs too ?
All US Navy Ships should be named after military personnel who gave their
“….last full measure of devotion…”, Abraham Lincoln quote from 1863.
Same goes for federal buildings. We need to stop naming buildings after politicians. Building monuments to dead politicians is obscene, with the single exception of President George Washington, without whom this country would not exist, and neither would liberty.
And Roads, and bridges, and stadiums and millions of other examples. The fact is that ALL of these are paid for by taxpayers, not crappy pols that enter bills to spend/waste more money to put their names in lights.
Good, our ships should be named after war heroes and presidents.
No reason at all to name a Navy ship after Ruth Bader Ginsburg. But Tubman was a hero. Beyond her work helping slaves escape, she scouted for the Union army.
I’d leave that one alone.
Fun fact: During WW2 a Liberty ship was named after Tubman. Even back in those less enlightened days her contributions were recognized.
Enough of celebrating Communists.
I feel bad for the crew, all these years.
Did sailors from other vessels call it "The Tub"?
Agreed.
A lot of people did that. We're only recognizing her because of the color of her skin. This is the sort of divisive DEI politics Trump and Hegseth are actively removing from the military.
Milk and Bader will be easy to CANX, but he’ll have a harder time with Tubman as she was an active, armed combatant in the Civil War (mainly as a scout and spy) who worked directly with the Union forces. Like her or lump her, she did encompass the Warrior Ethos.
Way way down in the article there’s this on the list of name changes:
“according to CBS News and the New York Times”
I wouldn’t put it past those two to exaggerate what names are on the list to stir up trouble.
If you’re establishing a warrior culture those names have to go. The USS Harvey Milk?!! C’mon!
Scrub Milk and Ginsberg, yes. but leave Harriet Tubman alone. She was a critical person in the advancement against slavery.

Yes, indeed. That does not diminish Tubman’s contributions. It just means she was not alone in that regard.
> This is the sort of divisive DEI politics… <
As I’m sure you’ll agree, DEI is a terrible, very corrosive thing. But I don’t think honoring Tubman is a DEI thing. My exhibit #1 would be the Liberty ship SS Harriet Tubman.
There was no such thing as DEI back in those days. They were about as anti-DEI as you can get. Yet they recognized Tubman’s contributions. Nothing wrong for us doing the same.
