Microsoft has confirmed that the Windows 11 version 24H2 update is now in its final rollout phase and will soon be delivered automatically to millions of Home and Pro users around the world. As of May 2, 2025, any unmanaged device running Windows 11 versions 21H2, 22H2, or 23H2—or even Windows 10—will see the 2024 Update download in the background. After the download completes, users can choose when to install the update or postpone it by going to Settings, then Windows Update.

SNIP

To avoid disruptions, Windows Update offers a four‑week postponement option. Should you need more time, you can use command‑line tools or adjust local policies to stop or block the update permanently.

Another Microsoft date rape. When your machine is asleep, they force an update on it.

Consent... not a Microsoft thing.

is there a downside to downloading and running the new release? I’ve always heard its best to keep your devices updated...

My plenty powerful (dual boot with Ubuntu) Windows 10 box is purposefully NOT set to UEFI, so that Microsoft cannot pull that garbage. And no, I do not care when it goes out of support.

I just don’t understand this....

Percentage of Computers Using Microsoft Windows
As of early 2025, Microsoft Windows remains the dominant operating system for desktop and laptop computers worldwide:

Windows holds about 72% of the global desktop operating system market share as of March 2025.

Apple’s macOS accounts for around 15% of desktop systems, with Linux and Chrome OS making up most of the remainder.

When considering all computing devices (including smartphones and tablets), Windows’ share is lower:

Windows has approximately 25% of the total global operating system market (including mobile and desktop).

Android leads overall with about 46%, and iOS has around 18%.

Percentage of Home Computers Using Microsoft Windows
There are no official, globally standardized statistics that separate home (consumer) computers from business or institutional use. However, available data and expert estimates suggest:

Windows likely accounts for about 60% of home (consumer) desktop and laptop computers in the United States, with macOS at around 30%, and Chrome OS/Linux making up the remaining 10%.

Globally, the share of Windows among home computers is probably higher than macOS but lower than its total desktop share, as business and education sectors often boost Windows’ numbers.

“Every statistic I can find about the market share of Windows and macOS in the US appears to include businesses and the government... If I were to estimate the market distribution for consumer desktops, I would venture a guess of around 60% for Windows, 30% for Mac, and about 10% for Chrome OS and Linuxcombined.

And:

Windows 11 KB5058405 update may prevent some PCs from starting

Microsoft has botched yet another Windows Update. It has confirmed that some PCs may fail to start after installing the KB5058405 update for Windows 11.

Microsoft released the update a few weeks ago, during Patch Tuesday. Shortly after it rolled out the update, reports began to surface that some computers were failing to boot. The error code associated with the issue is 0xc0000098, and displays a message that reads, “Your PC/Device needs to be repaired. The operating system couldn’t be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.”

An update on the Windows release health dashboard mentions that the issue is to be related to the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface driver, commonly known as the ACPI.sys file. It is a kernel-mode driver that allows Windows to manage hardware resources and power states. Microsoft says that the error could also occur with a different file name. The problem has now been acknowledged as a known issue that primarily affects devices running in virtual machines.

This includes Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Virtual Desktop, and On-premises virtual machines hosted on Citrix or Hyper-V. Microsoft says that Windows Home or Pro users are unlikely to face this issue, as virtual machines are mostly used in IT environments. The company says that is working on a resolution for this issue, and could release an Out-of-band update in the coming days.

For now, Microsoft has suggested a workaround for Azure users who installed the update and are facing problems. These users should repair their Windows VM using repair commands outlined in a support document. Bleeping Computer reports that Microsoft recently released an out-of-band update to patch a BitLocker recovery issue that affected Windows 10, causing boot failures on some PCs. This issue, like the one that affects VMs, also surfaced in the May Security Update.

One means of preventing the update is to not have enough memory available on your machine.

I know this because it's been failing at running the update for twice a day for several months now.

I dug into these numbers for about a week. They are purposely skewed. Turns out everyone claiming these numbers are highly funded from Microsoft. The Linux Desktop Market is at least double what they claim.

“is there a downside to downloading and running the new release?”

I don’t know about you, but for the last 25 years, each update has reduced efficiency and quality. Why I’m still in love with Windows 7. The best thing ever was when MS stopped “supporting” it.

I doubt they will push Win11 downloads to Win10 PC’s that do not qualify for an upgrade to Win11 (me). That would make no sense but then I haven’t looked into any of this.

I'm concerned about the use of the TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) required for Windows 11. Just the name reminds me of all the deep state organizations and techniques which were tightening the noose on free speech during the Brandon Regime. Some examples of the deceptive way they named industrial strength censorship programs and organizations below:

Trusted News Initiative

Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington

German Marshall Fund’s Alliance for Securing Democracy

I watched a high level geek talk about the use of TPM to secure computing and came away with the impression it wasn't what he said it was. It sounded like you would have to have the TPM to access certain websites farther down the line (e.g., No vaccine? Initiate TPM shutdown...). Yes, that's all paranoid but the players pushing this do not inspire trust.

If Microsoft ends all support for older versions in October of 2025, and you have to have this TPM to run the new, and only remaining version (consumer level, anyway), of Windows then I think Microsoft has unusual control. When it first came out, descriptions really sounded like the end of anonymity to me, because the TPM module must be present for the Win 11 upgrade, so Windows 11 machines without it cannot be upgraded.

But, the upgraded windows 11 has features which automatically take images of your desktop while you work. So you have a record of absolutely everything you've done on your computer (including content of typed documents which you later deleted or revised before saving) which you can then use to search so your 'memory' (ability to recover any moment in time, any document or image etc. is complete. Also the AI component of windows 11 allows you to search your computer for content, say, by asking the ai to locate photos of a brown hat, and it will find it.

All this to say, your computer will retain records and is feasibly searchable via AI by people we don't want to access our computers that way. Hackers, the state etc. That's not the stated plan - advertising is about how great it will be for us, and parts of it does sound good. But, with the TPM module ensuring you are unique/authenticated, and the capacity for your activities on your computer to be conveniently searched - it just sounds like the Tech giants at Microsoft are tired of this 'anonymity' trash.

I picture the 'searches' the Biden administration would have conducted on FReeper machines during the Covid plandemic if we had this 'Improved' version of Win 11/TPM on our machines - searching for any document criticizing Brandon that you typed on your computer, even after you deleted it etc. "Advocating Vaccine Hesitancy, Comrade?"  Yeah, I got trust issues.

Now when I look up TPM or other new Win 11 features, I don't see the kinds of text I used to see that made me cringe and turn away from this pile of 'improvement.'
