The Unseen Hand: Why AI’s Rise Will Mark a New Era of Net Job Loss
American Thinker ^

AI is distinct because its developments are not technical in nature; they are profoundly cerebral, cognitive, and intellectual

Content creation, once the ultimate refuge for human creativity, is now under threat. AI models can generate articles, marketing copy, and even basic code. The sheer volume of AI-generated content means that fewer human writers will be needed to produce original material.

Good read-interesting. Should we be worried? The writer suggests we could all turn to the 'soma' drug in A Brave New World. It was a 'happy' drug. I'm thinking of the Eloi in the Time Machine where everyone is beautiful.

**These AI systems can handle thousands of inquiries simultaneously, learn from each interaction, and operate 24/7 without breaks or salaries**

I’m old and unworried-money in the S&P. And the next generation that knows nothing but DEI?

Standards will just be lowered.

Once upon a time, all things were made by skilled craftsmen. Stone masons, wood carvers, plasterers, etc. People took pride in workmanship and personal skills. But then factories started turning out plentiful goods with mass production. People shrugged and said, “Yeah, it’s not as good — but this stuff is cheap!”

We’ve all seen AI writing and AI analysis. It’s not really at the level of a skilled human — but this stuff is cheap and easy! It’s like Gresham’s Law — bad money drives out good money. Low quality AI will be dominant over high quality human efforts.

I expect massive job loss for just about anyone who doesn’t work with their hands. And that will come in time as well.

“and even basic code”?

What an ignorant observation. Code is one of the simplest things that AI can master. It’s a language, but with none of the subtleties of human languages. Coding should be completely blown away in no time by AI. And I say good riddance. There are numerous tasks that are part of modern work that are better suited for AI-controlled machines. It’s not a bad thing, but it means that young people have to be prepared for a far more dynamic work future.

What I’ve seen so far has been quite flat, and decidedly UNoriginal-sounding.Superficial and — in a word — dull.

The key skill to software development is understanding the problem you’re trying to solve. The coding is the easy part.

I use AI. It’s wonderful, as a starter. It just can’t get the job done. I end up having to spend nearly as much time, not all, but nearly as much making things correct and up to my standards.

Elon Musk has that vision. He wants to go to Mars.

If you live in the EU, your goal is to get a cushy job with the government.

It lacks that ineffable “spark” of Human consciousness.
...a sense of randomness, some unpredictability, and danger.

It’s one-dimensional and obvious.

...and very wordy.

What if AI can take care of 90% of all our needs? Paradise to some but there will be a lot of Idle hands out there getting bored and restless. These people will need to be kept in line and pacified. More government control. AI will be the morlocks and the rest of us will be eloi.

Reminds me of all those nights in the 70’s hanging out and smoking dope while drinking Boones Farm and listening to the LP’s. It was an easy life and just enough money was made to pay the bills.

I find it interesting that the soi-disant creatives, such as artists and writers, didn’t give a flying fig when robots replaced my warehouse job or OCR my data-entry job but now that AI is affecting *them*, the Truly Important People, it’s an issue.

This isn’t new, it’s a continuation of what’s been happening for centuries. It’s called Creative Destruction. The wheel did away with the job of lugging things on one’s back...

We were told computers were going to steal jobs. But they created jobs, just different ones.

Yup. AI can give us plenty of time on our hands. People tend not to handle that very well. The devil makes work for idle hands. So The Powers That Be will need to find new ways to control people. TPTB will like the economic benefits of AI, so AI will keep coming on strong. But the people? Yeah, the people will need to be kept in line and pacified.

Artists don’t understand the concept of no one being willing to buy their art. They can always paint houses.

My wife is a master falconer. Part of the training to go for specific kinds of "game" is to target the bird toward that "game". That involves having captive "bag game" to serve as the training tools. The term "bag game" conjured up another image..squirrels and rabbits sitting in grocery bags ready for their new role. We had a friend who was a good cartoonist. He could have made that image come to life, but it never happened.

Enter ChatGPT image generation. Just ask for an image of rabbits and squirrels in grocery bags with a title "Bag Game" and "Chat" obliges. No cartoonist necessary. I tried another image of a Black and Tan mini-dachshund sitting on a black and silver Suzuki S40 motorcycle. Chat generated that image with ease.

I suspect the era of the political cartoonist as a vocation is at risk with AI image generation.
