Triim corn silks after pollination to avoid pests

For my garden space Watermelons and Sweet Corn are a no-go, though he TRIES every year to grow them both in his gardens.
His problem is that he LEAVES in July and isn’t back other than for a weekend here and there until November. That MIGHT be his problem. I think he thinks he’s Amish; Sew it and forget it, LOL!
