I do not recall if you already do this, but when you plant, consider not planting them vertically, dig in your fertilizer, consider making a bit of a trench, and lay them down at a 45 degree angle. It sounds like you will have a lot of stem. The stem will produce additional roots over a larger area for a more vigorous plant. Here is some more info on this.

He says that you can there is no one Right method, but his "Trench" method produces more roots. Doing this 45 degrees is a modified Trench method that can produce good results.

Thanks, and I have heard of that and may try it, but I actually usually dig a rather deep hole and plant then up to the first leaves, and even strong winds did not break any.

The reason they look like they have a lot of stem is because I picked off lower leaves, many of which looked diseased after the deluge. The plants furthest away from the building and the new roof are overall doing better.
