Wildfire smoke is pouring into the Midwest from Canada as dozens of fires burn north of the border. Let's get you caught up on all the latest information:

Where Is The Biggest Risk Right Now? Since the upper Midwest is closest to the fires burning in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, upper-level winds are blowing the thick smoke southward. This has prompted air quality alerts for the entire state of Wisconsin on Friday, as well as parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and northern Minnesota.

Chicago residents could also experience degraded air quality as the smoke pushes southward.

Where The Smoke Could Invade Next From weather.com senior digital meteorologist Chris Dolce:

The image below shows near-surface smoke on Saturday afternoon – this is the kind of smoke that can be unhealthy to breathe since it's at the lower levels. As you can see, the greatest concentrations of that will be in the Midwest and Northern Plains today through this weekend. However, some of it is modeled in a less concentrated fashion into the South and East this weekend:

It started getting DARK here, yesterday at 5pm! Looked like rain, but it was the smoke. As the sun went down, it looked like an Eclipse was happening. Gray background, bright RED orb of a sun.

More fun today and tomorrow! *Cough* *Hack* *Wheeze*

Only ‘patchy smoke’ today and tomorrow. Then 90 degrees going into next week! Yippee. Not.

Today:

Mostly sunny and mild. Patchy smoke is expected in the morning. Wind: N 5-10 MPH

Tonight:

Mostly clear and seasonably cool. Wind: NE 5-10 MPH

Tomorrow:

Mostly sunny and very mild. Patchy smoke is possible. Wind: N 5 MPH

Canadian wildfire smoke and a dust plume from Africa could collide over the South this week

A plume of dust originating from Africa’s Sahara Desert is tracking west across the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday and will soon reach parts of the Southeast.

Premier Scott Moe accredited the start of “over 90 per cent of the fires” in Saskatchewan to be caused by “human activity.”

“If you take away the human activity that’s starting those fires, we would have a lot less fires in the province,” Moe said Sunday, further suggesting an increase in agricultural production, province and nationwide, would help prevent wildfires throughout the season.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford chimed in, suggesting forestry cleanup — including tree harvesting and dry brush removal — was imperative to mitigate the chance of widespread fires.
