The Rick Derringer with Dana Carvey skit on SNL was one of the best of the early SNL years.

Growing up in Dayton, OH, I saw the McCoys at a teen club in a basement level of a shopping center.
They were the opening act on a 12” high stage and then stayed on stage to be the backing band for Simon & Garfunkle’s “Homeward Bound” tour.
He played on Steely Dan tracks - “Show Biz Kids”, “Chain Lightening” and Donald Fagen’s “Nightfly” album among others.

Too young, but he had a good run and re-invented himself successfully. SXM has been playing a lot of McCoys tracks today and they were as good a garage band as any, with a couple big hits and lots of great covers. RIP Rick.

Perhaps most significantly, Derringer produced the first six albums by platinum-selling parodist "Weird Al" Yankovic. Their partnership netted Derringer two Grammys for the Michael Jackson parodies "Eat It" and "Fat." The former featured a scorching guitar solo from Derringer to approximate Eddie Van Halen's contribution to the original ... Did not know this. Seems to be a common response so far to Derringer's career in the music industry. RIP, Rick.

Thanks for the post. I was raised in the Fort Recovery-Fort Greenville Mercer/Darke county area. My mom was from Fort Recovery and my Dad went to HS there too. Celina was the home of many family members.
My boy scout master was a Derringer, and WWII Ranger at Point Do Hoc on D-Day. He turned our troop into backpacking, river crossing infantrymen and we loved it, not knowing his past. I spent k-8 in Dayton but all my summers on two farms just off Ohio State Rt 49 near Lightville and Ft Recovery.
I’ve got a guitar collection of over 25 instruments and loved this guy’s music. It is sad when we lose the great ones.

I’m very sad to say that my friend, rock guitar legend Rick Derringer, has passed. Rick produced my first 6 albums and played guitar on my earliest recordings, including the solo on “Eat It.” He had an enormous impact on my life, and will be missed greatly. RIP
