Why does less than half the population pay the taxes that are supposed to prevent us from racking up this debt? Flat tax? Fair Tax? I don't care which, but this income tax where only honest hard working middle aged and legally employed people contribute has got to go.

I've been thinking a lot lately that the tariffs are, in some way, the Fair Tax some of us FReepers have been supporting. If tariffs do raise prices so that the govt can get some money, then it's indirectly a fair tax. Or at least, it would be if we got rid of the income tax. (The idea of a Fair Tax is it would replace the income tax, not be a new tax in addition to the income tax.)

But one could argue that the Trump tax cuts are a lowering of income tax, with tariffs replacing some of what we used to pay in income taxes. So us Fair Tax supporters are getting half of what we wanted. And this version of the Fair Tax is only on purchases of imports (tariffs), not on all purchases.

This is the first big Bill since President Trump was inaugurated in January. He hasn’t even been in office for six months, and Rand Paul wants to oppose the President so early in his term? Shame on him.

"Rand, just STFU and vote for whatever Trump wants."

Now isn't the time for Rand to oppose the President's Bill, but if wants to die on that hill, let him.

Rand’s an ideologue, sometimes useful but sometimes worthless.

The only sane way out of this mess is to grow the economy but rand would rather we import cheap asian products while our people don’ make enough to live on.

Or we can pay off the debt by inflation which is destroying the middle class.

It's funny how they take the debt and then divide it by the number of...

TAXPAYERS!

WE didn't run up the debt over 60 years. WE weren't in Congress.

The people who did this were the Congressmen, Senators, and POTUSes who voted for and signed these spending bills.

There's an historical record of how much deficit and debt accumulated under which Congressmen and Senators.

It could be determined exactly how much each one owed for the overspending.

It's the fault and the RESPONSIBILITY of the legislators and the POTUSes.

Nice try attempting to shove it off on the people.

Thanks. Maybe some type of salary disincentive that is linked to the rate of increase in Debt Per Taxpayer. Or perhaps even an inverse incentive that rewards cost cutting to reduce the taxpayer’s burden. The DOGE team could probably come up with an interesting formula to induce more congressional spending discipline.

This spend-a-thon, malinvestment and generational theft can’t go on. It simply must be reversed and contained.

“NOW? WHY DIDN’T YOU “SOUND THE ALARM “ when dems were in charge?. Worthless POS. I felt the same way Trey Gowdy. Talk and no action. He is still the same.”

Good grief, you’re getting busted for the “Worthless POS” comment.

Because if you had done even 5 minutes of research you would have found the following:

Well good for him. Did he say anything about how Trump was the one who was going to try to fix it and not the worthless pos colleagues in the senate?

Or did he trash Trump on the campaign trail

That’s my problem with him.

All talk

His concern for the deficit and debt is irrespective of who the President is.

I don’t see it that way

He can think or say a lot and propose budgets to the McConnell senate all day long. Nothing is going to happen until maga fixes it.

I like how they divide the debt among "citizens" "taxpayers" etc.

It should be pro rated and divided among current and former Members of Congress, the POTUS, and VPOTUS.

They incurred the debt.

No citizen voter ever incurred a penny of national debt.
