Russia does not see the Vatican as a serious venue for peace talks with Ukraine because the Holy See is the seat of Catholicism and is surrounded by Italy, a NATO and EU member, three senior Russian sources told Reuters.

They also point out that many Russian officials cannot even fly there due to Western restrictions.

The Vatican has so far been silent in public on the idea raised by U.S. President Donald Trump after a call with President Vladimir Putin that Pope Leo XIV could host talks aimed at ending Europe's deadliest conflict since World War Two.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said last week that Pope Leo XIV, the first U.S.-born pontiff, had confirmed his willingness to host talks during a phone call with her.

"The Vatican definitely is not seen in Russia as a serious force capable of resolving such a complex conflict," one senior Russian source acquainted with top-level Kremlin thinking said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

yeah it doesn't matter where the talks are the main problem is Putin invaded Ukraine because he wanted all of it - he still wants all of it.

He will act like a Russian - which is lie, cheat and steal while talking all sanctimonious and like a bad ass. So he'll keep saying he wants to end the war until he has conquered the Ukraine and then it'll be over.

what else does he got to do, he didn't become tsar to preside over Russia's descent into decrepitude

The Vatican has no role to play in peace talks. This isn’t about religion. Clean up your own house before you stick you nose in someone else’s.

"It is a war of conquest by a Stalinist wanna-be emperor for natural resources and personal wealth, nothing Christian about it."

It's a proxy war between the U.S. and Russia. None of the billion of tax payer dollars this country sent to Ukraine has been accounted for. The only people winning this war are the politicians on both sides of the aisle, and their big donors with investments in the military industrial complex. Ukraine is the size of Texas, and sits 5,000 miles away. There is no national security interest for the U.S. in Ukraine, but there is a national security interest in Texas, which the RAT Party has been steadily working to turn blue. America First!!

When someone suggested having Pope Pius XII involved in the peace settlement at the end of WWII, Stalin dismissed the idea contemptuously: "How many divisions does the pope have?"

Stalin was a former Russian Orthodox seminarian. But I think he was less religious by then.

Really?

Would Netanyahu be invited to hold peace talks with Gaza in Riyadh?

Who’s the moron who would think the heads of two predominately Eastern Orthodox countries would agree that the Vatican was a fine place to sit down and talk peace?

Somebody’s got a loose screw...
