Russia does not see the Vatican as a serious venue for peace talks with Ukraine because the Holy See is the seat of Catholicism and is surrounded by Italy, a NATO and EU member, three senior Russian sources told Reuters.
They also point out that many Russian officials cannot even fly there due to Western restrictions.
The Vatican has so far been silent in public on the idea raised by U.S. President Donald Trump after a call with President Vladimir Putin that Pope Leo XIV could host talks aimed at ending Europe's deadliest conflict since World War Two.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said last week that Pope Leo XIV, the first U.S.-born pontiff, had confirmed his willingness to host talks during a phone call with her.
"The Vatican definitely is not seen in Russia as a serious force capable of resolving such a complex conflict," one senior Russian source acquainted with top-level Kremlin thinking said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Actually, I did wonder why The Vatican was chosen to be the host city/ country for war negotiations.
I never associated Zelensky with any adherence to Christianity. Putin’s ties to that faith may be more a matter of national culture vs an expression of his own spirituality.
Perhaps some thought geographically, The Vatican was a suitable middle ground for all three countries to converge for a formal discussion. Now, that may not even happen, regardless of where it is to be located.
Russia’s position on this makes sense on a couple of grounds.
Theologically, it’s a Western Church vs Eastern Church war.
And the Pope is an American leading a body which in recent years has become a liberation theology church.
It could be that the Pope could prove to be an honest mediator, but he doesn’t really have a track record in that area yet, so far as I know.
It’s a holy war?
Putin’s already missing Frank the Hippie Pope...
The other thing that Russia wants is the ability to negotiate with UKRAINE, rather than the Neocons via Ukraine. If in Europe, it will be much easier for the Neocons to direct the negotiation than if in Saudi Arabia, for example, as the Neocons would not be invited.
Of course the Neocons could use phones, but it’s no secret that we tap all important calls.
It isn’t a war between theologians at all.
It is a war of conquest by a Stalinist wanna-be emperor for natural resources and personal wealth, nothing Christian about it.
Does anyone other than Marxists?
Religion has nothing to do with this war. The Ukrainians mainly Orthodox.
It makes no sense to have talks there so what is the real reason?
Calling the Neocons out is getting under your skin, ehhh.
Rather than responding with any intelligence SPAM FreeRepublic because you don’t like the term Neocons.
Well, go ahead, if SPAMMING FreeRepublic makes you feel important, but I suspect that JR will start getting tired of it, particularly as people start to complain.
Were they neocons when they called themselves neocons?
The Pope is offering a venue, not proposing to mediate.
And the venue is in the center of Europe that claims they have a right to arrest Putin. It is surrounded by a 1000 miles of NATO airspace, they would need to land at Rome Airport.
And god only knows the surveillance bugs at any venue of accommodations.
And despite the feigned innocence of some, there is an RCC Pole and Galician divide against the Orthodox.
It was a poor location.
Sure they do. That’s why Putin showed up in Turkey when he had the opportunity to do just that.
.
“Putin has all the cards.”
That is Martin Armstrong’s line!
