Sales collapse forces 'woke' mega-brand to make humiliating U-turn and relist on Amazon

America's most popular shoe is coming back to Amazon.

After a five-year hiatus, Nike shoes, clothing, and accessories are returning to the e-commerce giant.

The athletic brand swiped its products from the platform in 2019, as part of a push to sell more directly to consumers.

Consumer interest has slumped, with sales dropping a staggering 9 percent in March, amid increased running shoe competition.

Hoka, Brooks, and Saucony are all gaining sales in the athletic sneaker industry after spending millions of dollars on branding deals with running clubs and community events.

Nike, which has cut back on small-scale sponsorships, has been shedding market share to the upstart competitors.

To minimize the losses, Nike is reinvesting in its corporate relationships. It has also announced a deal with French department chain Printemps and a pop-up agreement with Urban Outfitters.

But social headwinds persist against its US sales: the company is facing backlash from American conservatives that have criticized its marketing campaigns as 'woke.'

Nike has gone through a wave of changes as it hopes to recapture market dominance.

In September 2024, the shoemaker announced that Elliot Hill would be taking over as the new CEO. Hill started with the company as an intern in 1988.

I like Hoka shoes and am on my second pair. None of the trash woke baggage you get with that Nike brand. In fact, now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve EVER bought a single Nike product.

I remember US Keds back in the day. I have not kept up with modern brands such as Nike or Puma, or know why they are a superior shoe.

You mean people don’t like Nike supporting youth “gender affirming care”?

Probably far right bigots are behind Nike’s troubles.

Oh and yes, almost forgot, Russian disinformation.

I know a lot of us eschewed the brand after they hired Colin Kaepernick:

“Kaepernick posted a Nike ad featuring his face and wrote: ‘Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything. (Hashtag) JustDoIt’”

JustDoIt for me and my family was to immediately switch brands. I like Hoka but prefer “old people’s shoes” G-Defy after a leg and foot injury, they’ll send you two types of inserts you can choose from, I use the corrective one and it’s helped with knee and leg pain.

I don’t think being woke has hurt Nike as much as short sightedness.

“ Hoka, Brooks, and Saucony are all gaining sales in the athletic sneaker industry after spending millions of dollars on branding deals with running clubs and community events.

Nike, which has cut back on small-scale sponsorships, has been shedding market share to the upstart competitors.”

I’m not defending their woke stupidity, but why you would ever abandon your core like they demonstrably did above shows they read too much of their own press.

I also think personally they are just too expensive as a brand. Sure your high end stuff might have enough differentiation in it to justify its price but for someone just looking for a shoe or some gym shorts or shirt, there is absolutely no reason to be spending a premium just to have a name in a basic commodity product

“I don’t think I’ve EVER bought a single Nike product.”

i tried some on one time, but the molded footbed didn’t come close to fitting my feet; felt like walking on rocks ... ASICS work for me; mrs catnipman likes Hoka ...

I use to run a lot back in the 70’s.
Bought a pair of high end (at the time) Nikes.
They were so unstable that they nearly ruined my knees.
Went to New Balance and have worn them ever since.

Nike’s demented trip into wokism guarantees I’ll never try them again.

I walk a great deal and my shoe is New Balance, have been a loyal customer for over 40 years. If I could not get New Balance my go to is Brooks.

I will never buy a Nike product voluntarily and never knew they weren’t on Amazon.

They’re evil and make garbage.

No Nike ever. I like Brooks running shoes. Brooks is accused of supporting Trump because they don’t support liberals.

“Brooks Running does not officially support Donald Trump. The company emphasizes diversity and inclusion. While some shoe brands engage in political endorsements, Brooks maintains a neutral stance. They focus on community engagement and product innovation within the footwear industry, aligning their identity with equity.”
