Not Canada, not Greenland, not Gaza. It’s one that almost no one has thought of.
If you believe President Trump, America is in an expansionist mood. Locations from Greenland to Gaza have been mentioned as potential new territories for American acquisition and stewardship. Is this merely talk, or can any of these areas be acquired or persuaded to change allegiance to become the 51st state?
The two most obvious candidates are the District of Columbia and the Territory of Puerto Rico. The problem with the District becoming the 51st state is that it was established by the U. S. Constitution. Thus, an amendment to the Constitution would be required to change its status.

Would make sense for all the residents of dc to be considered residents of Maryland and let them vote in that state’s elections. Might be something Republican Congress should look into before Dems take over again and to grant DC statehood
But for congressional and senate races, we can propose that they will be represented by their Representatives and Senators in Maryland.
But we know that the Democrats will never go for that because eventually they want to make DC a state which means two Democratic Senators.
But thats a stupid argument because Rhode Island is 23 times larger than DC.
We in New Jersey are hoping to turn it red, or at least purple it up this time around. If it stays Blue Jersey, throw us out too. I'll stay behind as part of the Maquis.

D.C. being kind of a special case, I would not think could even be considered for statehood. No one in their right mind would want it to be considered, either. Puerto Rico would just likely be another debt we’d have to worry about. Would not be any use to the U.S. as a state as far as I can see.
As for WDC, I think making the residents considered part of Maryland for senate, house, and presidental elections wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Considering the political & legal gridlock in DC, there’s absolutely no way either party is going to allow the balance in the House & Senate to be disturbed by the entry of just 1 new state. They’ll have to enter in pairs, or not at all just like the period before the US Civil War. In fact, it also happened in 1959 when both Alaska and Hawaii were added.
I’m thinking Alberta will become a territory. Possibly Greenland. They may have to wait until the politics of the situation becomes clear before either or both get statehood.
The CIA & Pentagon were trying to box-in JFK so that he only had one option once the Bay of Pigs started to go south (their preferred option: US invasion). They attempted the same thing in the Cuban Missile Crisis and failed to force JFK’s hand there as well. I’m generally not a JFK fan, but I give him credit. He knew when he was being gas-lit.

Congress should enact enabling legislation for Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution, "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government ...."
Congress could define what a "Republican Form of Government" is and specify procedures and mechanisms for ensuring that each State has a Republican Form of Government.
For example, Congress could establish that a Republican Form of Government requires fair and honest elections, and specify how they are to be conducted.
A lot could be done under this Section of the Constitution.
Florida used to be blue, Iowa used to be blue, West Virginia used to be blue, etc. etc.
