CHAT: Hey anybody know of an app that allows you to take a picture of a coin to identify it and give a $ value?
Posted on 05/23/2025 11:27:12 AM PDT by mowowie
My grandmother who passed away in 1996 had this thing where she was buying coins. I got a few ziplocks full of them stashed away in a draw that i'm thinking of checking out.

Some are packaged in those small square white cardboard display packages and many others not. Many coins are American others not. I'd love to find a app where i can just take a picture rather than research every single coin individually. Any Freeper know of such app?
Thanks for your advice in advance.. :)

Search your app store/google play. They exist. I have no idea if they are legit or scammy.

Keep in mind that the values those apps give for coins are always wildly incorrect. They will identify them, but so far no app will reliably grade them.

I used one of the leading apps to identify and value some stamps I have. The app said my stamp was worth over $100. In reality, it's worth about 5 cents.

Seeing that as a result was no doubt, rather anti-climatic.
Good thing you didn’t make any new purchases based on all your likely ‘winnings’.

I would take them to a coin shop that has a good reputation cause then you can turn them into cash immediately and be done. (no pawn shops ever)
I am lucky to have a bunch near me

Easiest thing to do is take them to a coin shop and ask the proprietor if any are valuable.

My suggestion. Take a picture of both sides of one of the coins and ask Grok.

This
How do you know that app isn’t recording coins you have, and paring it with an ip address that’s cross-referenced with your home address???
Paranoid? Maybe—who knows these days.
Stay safe my friends!

I agree! CoinSnap is what I use on my phone. I know an antique dealer who uses it.

Go to your public library and ask if they have coin I’d books. It should give a ball park figure on what the coin collection is worth.

You might actually enjoy taking an hour to just dive in to a few. I inherited a bunch about 20 years ago and discovered about ten really valuable pieces. You’ll learn what to look for in no time, but invest in a magnifier.

Seeing that as a result was no doubt, rather anti-climatic. What's this got to do with "Global Warming?"
Or do you mean "anti-climactic?"
