Russia economy meltdown as potato prices skyrocket after abysmal harvest season

The price of potatoes in Russia has soared by 52% since the start of the year, according to new figures. Imports have failed to offset the poor harvest last year, which saw the total potato crop decline by 12%, according to Reuters.

Heavy rain and a frosty spring this year has hit potato farmers, made worse by the fact the area of the country seeded for the crop was reduced after the bumper 2023 harvest which drove down prices. According to Kommersant daily data, potatoes have tripled in price in the supermarkets compared to 2024, reaching a record high of 85.4 roubles (£0.79) per kilogram. Russian import duties on potatoes were lifted amid concerns about inflation, but increased imports from Egypt have not managed to keep prices from ballooning.

The spiralling cost of potatoes comes amid sharp price increases for other Russian household staples. The price of cabbage is up by 49% since the start of the year, meanwhile beetroot is up 40%, and onions are up by 34%.

I thought they had an egg crisis. Now we’ve moved onto potatoes. There’s plenty of potato-heads in this country we can send them, starting with Biden.

Ukraine won the war by surviving February and March 2022.

Now it’s just Putin trying to save face.

Note that both sides have lost countless lives and resources

The average Russian makes between $850 to $1100 a month, according to what I have seen, so you have to take that into account.

Is there anything else they can eat?
Potato bread. Potato stew. Potatoes Gratin. Hash browns. Potato cake benedict. Potatoes with onions. Steak and potato pie. Scalloped potatoes. Roasted potatoes. Potato fries. Mashed potatoes. Pepperoni pizza stuffed potatoes. Potato rolls. Corned beef hash. Potato salad. Air fryer baked potato. Potato pancakes. Tater tots. Potato skins. Potatoes Romanoff. Hasselback potatoes. Potato soup.

That stuff gets old after a while...

$1000 translate in 2 tons of potatoes in this case. A starving moment for sure:)
