At first, it seemed that the Indiana Fever’s home win over Chicago Sky on Saturday would be just another spicy chapter in the rivalry between Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark. Both players were typically excellent: Clark spurred the Fever to victory with a triple-double, while Reese grabbed 17 rebounds to go with her 12 points.
But it was a moment in the third quarter that WNBA fans will be talking about for weeks to come. Some of them may even do so without resorting to cheap bigotry. With 4:38 remaining, Clark reached for the ball over Reese’s head, made what appeared to be deliberate contact with her arm, and sent her opponent spiraling to the floor. There was a brief confrontation, Clark was hit with a flagrant foul and Reese received a technical. After the game, Clark said she didn’t have cynical intent leading up to the foul, and Reese agreed calling it “a basketball play.”
Depending on who you ask, the moment was either enthralling or disappointing. Fans may recall conversations about the physicality of the WNBA last season, as Clark was knocked around the court by veterans. It showed that women’s basketball is every bit as tough as the men’s game, and sometimes a foul is just a foul.
A moment like this isn’t always bad for anyone involved, including the players. Many say that these types of exchange drive up engagement, whether online or by attracting fans to WNBA arenas, which have enjoyed record attendance since Reese and Clark entered the league last season.
But there are, of course, different types of engagement. The increase in attention, scrutiny, and discourse can quickly take a downward turn, especially when women are involved.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Only the clucks at the Guardian would attach a level of significance to something as insignificant as women’s sports.
Reese made an Academy Award-worthy flop.
It's not racial when the white girl gets fouled by the black girl, but when the black girl gets flop-fouled by the white girl its "worse than Pearl Harbor," as the Commies like to say.
Maybe they can do a duet about how much they hate Trump kinda a modern day version of ebony and ivory
The sooner Caitlyn can get off of that team, the better off professionally and personally, she will be. The majority of her team members (coaches included), seem to hate her guts, and root for her failure, because she’s a ‘White Girl’ playing ‘their’ game.
Thing is, where could she go? I don’t keep up with most sports in general, women’s pro basketball even less so.
She already missed some Olympic Team last year.
If there are any lucrative endorsements, grab them, like now! Maybe she can be on ESPN in a few more years as one of those ‘Paid Consultants’.
It’s a boring sport and not enough people watch it for it to actually be self-sustaining. It needs cash infusions from the NBA.
I watched some of the game and from a distance, CC looked like a tall gangly dude. When I got closer to the tv, I could make out a curved out throat that certainly didn’t look like any woman I have ever seen in my decades of being a woman.
Just sayin’.
She needs to get back to that Iowa team. They were not the best players but they knew how to play like a team. And they were "normal".
The WNBA is weird. They all date each other. It's like an episode of "Orange Is the New Black" lol.
Probably some testosterone in her. That's why she can play ball.
I see, soooo, your saying that she isn’t a woman and that’s why she is so good? Sounds pretty ridiculous. Just sayin.
Woke can’t survive without invoking race. What tells us is Woke is racist. Remember the rivalry between Magic Johnson and Larry Byrd. It was a rivalry stupid.
99.9% of the US doesn’t give a rip about the WNBA.
The WNBA is weird. They all date each other
The WNBA - Where you can lick your opponent!
I'm sorry. I wasn't able to read the entire headline without falling asleep.
But at least off the court, Larry and Magic are good friends.
Guardian Headline: Black and white athletes bumped each other during a basketball game. Both said it was just “a basketball play” - but we’re gonna make it all about race anyway!
Woke types won’t be satisfied until everyone accepts various abnormalities as normal, and sorry - that’s never going to happen.
Homosexuality is not normal.
Women built like men is not normal.
Men pretending they are women is not normal.
Someone missing an arm is not normal.
None of these things are evil IMHO, but it IS evil to force society into accepting as normal something that is not.
And there’s one more abnormality no one wants to talk about:
Interracial marriages. There, I said it.
There’s nothing remotely evil or wrong with it - my own daughter is married to a black man and I have absolutely nothing against it. He’s a great guy and they love each other. But statistically, it’s not ‘normal’, so why do we have to pretend it is?
Here’s another one: Female plumbers.
Again, nothing at all wrong with it - but why do we have to pretend something is normal when in fact it is very unusual?
“They all date each other”
Not all, just most.
And yeah that’s strange.
Yep, back to walking my turtle.....
