WASHINGTON, Thursday, May 18.

There was more than the usual progress made in the assassination trial to-day. The testimony offered on the part of the government was more direct and pertinent, and although there was a great deal of irrelevant testimony drawn out in cross-examination, and several side issues were tried, the session was an unusually interesting one.

The court-room was uncomfortably crowded, and the adjoining rooms were filled with spectators and witnesses. It was expected that the government would introduce its testimony against PAYNE, but no such evidence was presented.

ARNOLD, who thus far has been shown to have been merely an acquaintance of BOOTH, and on suspicious intimacy, received the burthen of the afternoon's work. His direct connection with BOOTH and his confederates was proven, but the effect of the testimony was favorable to him, in so far as it was shown by a government witness that some time previous to the assassination, ARNOLD and BOOTH quarreled at one of their secret meetings in this city, and that the former then withdrew from the plot and accepted a position At Fortress Monroe, where he remained until his arrest two days after the assassination. During the development of this evidence there were several damaging facts proven against ARNOLD, but he bore up well under it, seemingly confident and encouraged by the assurances of his counsel, Gen. THOMAS EWING who found himself opposed by the counsel

Please note: the trial took place just a few weeks after the crime. Sigh. The good old days.
