Dakota (Formerly The Buoys) - Timothy
Youtube ^ | 1970 | The Buois

This band approached Rupert Holmes and asked him to write them a song that would be banned. Rupert said okay, but why must it be banned? Their response was that we have no label sponsoring us, so if we have a hit that the radio stations will ban that we will receive name recognition.

The song Rupert came up with was Timothy, which was banned. The Buoys never quite hit the bigtime. They changed their name to Dakota and became the opening band for Queen.

This was one of the songs they did after their 25 year reunion in 2005.

Trapped in a mine, no food to eat/
And the only ones left to tell the tale/
Were Joe and me, an empty can of fava beans/
And a nice chianti

Lots of references to that song on FR while the Chilean miners were trapped, back in 2010.

“Banned?” Don’t I wish. I heard that song so often that my poor sixth-grade brain tried to escape thru my ears.

Worst song ever. And one of the most overplayed.

Timothy is one of the greatest songs of the 70’s. Sadly, it would have made the top10, maybe #1, had it received national airplay. Jerry Kelly was the great singer. Recently passed. 😨 Also, Give Up Your Guns was spectacular. Same band and composer.

Remember DOA? (”... life, is flowing out my body”)
Cannibalism. Dead on arrival teens. Defenestrated TVs.

I have heard about that song, and for that same reason, I’ve never had any interest in actually hearing the song.
I’m fine never knowing.

I am a little surprised that a group with no hits could have afforded to hire Rupert Holmes as a songwriter.
I recall him being very popular with the few songs he wrote.

I love that song.

I wasn’t born until December of 1970, so I’ve never heard it on the radio. A few years ago, I found it on YouTube and the song immediately went on my playlist.

I’m a bit weird when it comes to music. My favorite songs are dark, sad and morbid. Every Sunday I listen to my “Gloomy Sunday” playlist.

Here’s another really dark song and is a great song for Halloween because it contains jump scares.

I knew about this song from way back — in my grade school days, I was an avid fan of Dr. Demento. He played this a few times on his show.

Nothin’ like a good ol’ song about canibalism!!

My brother had the 45. I was never good at deciphering rock lyrics. I rediscovered Timothy years later. Great tune. I love the way the bouncy arrangement disguises the dark content.
