Key GOP holdout on Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’ calls for deeper cuts to Medicaid, ‘Green New Deal’ spending (only 5.67 years left)

WASHINGTON — A key House Republican holdout on President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” to provide tax cuts, border security, defense spending and green energy clawbacks is still calling for deeper spending cuts to chip away at the national debt — as the legislation heads for a critical vote Sunday.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), one of several GOPers who tanked the bill in the House Budget Committee on Friday, says he and other fiscal hawks are still hoping for hundreds of billions dollars more in savings to help reduce the nation’s $36 trillion debt.

The Texas Republican huddled with White House officials and Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought on Saturday to voice those concerns — but didn’t commit to backing the legislation before the Budget panel reconvenes Sunday at 10 p.m.

Afterwards, Roy told Trump ally Steve Bannon that the deficit hardliners still “think there ought to be work requirements that kick in immediately” for those on Medicaid — rather than delaying those until 2029 — and gutting $400 billion in green subsidies from former President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.

“We’re trying to move those up, so that would front load some of the savings. More importantly, I think it would create economic growth by getting people in the workforce,” he said on an episode of “War Room” of the Medicaid work requirements.

On the president’s pledge to eliminate the so-called “Green New Scam,” he added: “The President campaigned on terminating it, ending it right out of the gate.”

Not much of a fan of Chip Roy, but if he’s asking Deadbeats to start working NOW, rather than having a free ride for another 4 years and if he’s wanting to get rid of the crap in Biden’s Green New Deal, then I have to admit, he’s doing his job!

Where are the Spending Cuts?
What was the Purpose of DOGE, if the GOP House and Senate won’t enact
the found cuts?

Cutting the green scam stuff seems like it would be easy enough for other republicans to go along with.

I disagree. He has never fought he 36 trillion debt much before. He voted for CRs and omnibus bills.

Why fight now in the majority? He wants to be Veruca Salt now?

It’s called dealing. 4 years isn’t that long and it takes time, unfortunatel, to implement the changes.

They are all guilty, every last one of them....The budget could be balanced today, but these clowns refuse to do it. What must be asked is “what is stopping them?”

Good question.

They are quietly avoiding answering that. I have seen a few Republicans on TV (on FOX Business) get asked that question, and they completely and pathetically avoid answering it (in a typical politician way).

Sad.

If Republicans mess with Medicaid, then Republicans will lose Congress permanently.

No medicaid cuts to U.S. citizens. Cutting medicaid even to “deadbeats” would be a political loser. We don’t cut benefits to ordinary Americans. It just gives the democrats a talking point. Cutting green new deal would be good if possible. Sorry right now we need to win and taking away benefits from Americans won’t help towards that goal. Besides, how much will be saved by cutting off all payments to illegals? I imagine a helluva lot.

The concept of gradualism can no longer apply.

The debt size and compound interest erases any chance for “doing it a little at a time”. What little you do gets eaten by $1.1T interest.

It must be huge cuts. It must be massive upheaval. Tiny inconveniences mathematically fail.

Chipper Roy like to see himself in the news......that’s all he’s ever been good for. “Look at me....I’m a fiscal hawk gosh darn it..and I’m special too”..

Hopefully DOGE is represented in the budget numbers but who knows? Are all the DOGE cuts fully analyzed and ready for prime time?

The hardliners are right in that we have a $5T debt adder over the next two years and something serious needs to be done.

But the pubs have to work as a team. First things first — extend the tax cuts - permanently.

Unfortunately I don’t think the real big cuts needed are going to get into this bill.

Any unnecessary benefit must be cut, period. If needed, POTUS Trump has a few live chats during Prime Time to let the American people know the truth of what caused the mess and what it will take to clean it up.

However, in order to really sell it, politicians who have used government for gain must be prosecuted and sentenced to prison for a very long time, especially the judges.

So Chip Roy decides to make a stand when Trump is president? If so, he is a dirtbag.
