NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Florida (WSVN) — Rescue crews took a man to the hospital after he accidentally shot himself with his own firearm while inside the Walmart in Northeast Miami-Dade, officials said.

The gunshot startled shoppers at the large retailer located at 1425 NE 163rd Street, Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses said some people ducked for cover, while others asked what was happening.

When asked whether she was scared, a shopper said, “Yes.”

7News cameras captured Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies swarming the area.

“When we pulled up, there were so many lights, so many police cars,” said a customer named Penelope, “and then, when we went inside, the whole produce section was just like closed off, and they, like, told me to get out, so they’re, like, obviously expanding their search or whatever.”

Myra, another customer, said she was inside the store when she heard the shot.

“The guy dropped the gun, and then ‘boom,’” she said.

Myra said she ducked immediately after the shot rang out.

Paramedics with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived and transported the patient to a nearby hospital. Officials said he is expected to be OK.

As for customers inside the store, they said they’re grateful, because the outcome could have been much worse.

“It’s not the weirdest thing to happen in a Walmart. It’s honestly kind of expected,” said Myra.

Thank you for the correction. I guess Walmart in Florida is different in how they handle people with firearms in their store. In California when we sell a weapon, we don’t even let the customer carry out the weapon or the ammo. The buyer gets it outside. And if the company doesn’t want people having possession of a firearm in the store, then the company can ask no firearms be brought in.

In my state, Washington, they will allow a concealed carry weapon to be concealed until it is drawn. But it has caused as much as evacuations in stores throughout the nation. In the more than two dozen states with open carry laws, Walmart is “respectfully requesting that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores and Sam’s Clubs ... unless they are authorized law enforcement officers,’’ said Dan Bartlett, executive vice president of corporate affairs. That action follows “multiple cases’’ in which people entered their stores with visible weapons, upsetting customers and employees, Bartlett said.

So if a person wishes to carry aa concealed, he/she better keep it concealed or he/she will be asked to leave.

Likely a Glock?

You are either misinformed or have something against Glocks. You do know that most striker fired guns do not have (what you would call) an active safety, right? Yet you specifically single out Glock.

What about the SiG P320?

That’s the gun that had a very public drop-safety problem recently, where they would go off if dropped at a certain angle.

Additionally, even now there are some concerns that due to potential QC issue, especially around MIM parts used for the sear, in certain cases it can go off.

But no, it has to be a ‘Glock.’

While it could be the Sig P320, it's likely a Glock. Far more Glock handguns are sold than the Sig P320.

The Sig P320 is also significantly more expensive than a Glock and there's a direct correlation between pistol price versus the likelihood the carrier has a holster for it. To repeat Post 37, Mexican carry is not a good idea.

You do know that most striker fired guns do not have (what you would call) an active safety, right?

Most as in quantity sold (Glock) or as in more models of striker fired pistols?

Because these striker fired handguns all have manual safeties:

Beretta APX
FN FNS
Sig Sauer M17 (Yes, the military version of the P320 has a manual safety. Safety for combat - good. Safety for civilians - bad?)
Sig Sauer P365
Smith and Wesson M&P
Ruger EC-9
Ruger LC-9
Ruger Mark IV
Ruger Max 9
Ruger Security-9
Ruger SR-9
Springfield Armory Hellcat
Taurus GC3

As I commented in Post 26, you can even get a manual safety for your Glock:
