Trump considers joining Russia-Ukraine negotiations in Turkey, unclear if Putin will show

President Donald Trump said he may travel to Turkey for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, as he doesn’t believe President Vladimir Putin would show if he isn’t there.

"I don’t know if he’s showing up," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. "I know he would like me to be there. And that's a possibility."

-snip-

The president noted that he has a "full day" scheduled in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Thursday, and he’d planned on sending Secretary of State and interim national security advisor Marco Rubio.

But, he added, "I don't know that [Putin] would be there if I'm not there. We're going to find out. Marco's going and Marco's been very effective."

"If we could end the war, I'd be thinking about that. Now, tomorrow, we're all booked out, and you understand that, we're all set, UAE tomorrow, and so we have a very full situation. Now, that doesn't mean I wouldn't do it to save a lot of lives and come back."

At the White House before heading on his Middle East trip, Trump told reporters: "Don’t underestimate Thursday in Turkey."

The only thing that matters is what’s happening on the battleground, not this charade about “negotiations” that can’t even produce a meeting.

That jibe is a silly non-sequitur as Ukraine continues to lose land faster and Ukraine begs Russia to “ceasefire!”

Agreed. But I like Trump on these issues right now. He’s unrelenting. He wants everyone to stop fighting. India Pakistan, well it was a fairly typical flare-up this time with aerial dogfights and hopefully he helped talk both sides down. Ukraine Russia, he’s been hard on Zelensky perhaps owing to the knowledge that he’s been coddled for 3 years and the Europeans continue to egg him on plus realities on the ground, but if Putin refuses to show to the script will flip. He won’t stop talking at least, and maybe will add sanctions to either side as needed. In Riyadh he talked up the Abraham Accords, and did it again with the Syrians. He obviously has pretty strong views on Gaza and the Palestinians fractured leadership. With Yemen, he made them realize the futility of shooting at ships in the Red Sea, and this is of course related to Iran who lost their Hamas and Hezbullah proxies already… and he’s negotiating with Iran too.

He’s non stop trying to make peace and make economic deals. Can’t argue with the motives at all.

If Lavvrov and Rubio go but POTUS doesn’t, Zelensky technically outranks them both - he’s an elected head of a UN Charter member state, and they’re both underlings.

If POTUS is there but Putin isn’t, President Trump could lean on Zelensky but this could be construed as him lobbying on absent Putin’s behalf. Which then undermines any narrative based on him being a mediating presence. Likewise, he can’t take Zelensky’s side without Russia crying foul at being outgunned.

The best way to progress is for Zelensky and Trump to both attend, but abandon the talks if Putin doesn’t turn up... And both say explicitly, it’d be unfair for Russian underlings to negotiate against two heads of state without their own head of state present.

I see Kazan has brought up the troll thing about wearing a suit. Zelensky’s reasons for not wearing a suit have been consistent throughout, and he is just as unlikely to wear a suit in Putin’s or Trump’s presence as he is in the presence of Macron, Johnson, Starmer, Xi, or the Pope.

The problem with attacking that position given the solidarity principle behind it is, it appeals to the Russians and their sympathisers, but outside of those groups it will age like milk.

Nobody looking at the history of Ghandi today would be fixated on the fact he didn’t wear a suit without acknowledging the principle Ghandi was expressing.

Ghandi wore his garb in solidarity and to make a statement. He was consistent with it, which also mattered.

The Brits who made an issue out of the perceived “disrespect” of it found that this reflected far more badly on them in the long run than it reflected badly on Ghandi. There’s a lot about Ghandi that is open to debate, but his sartorial choice isn’t one of them.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський

@ZelenskyyUa

Today we held several meetings with the team regarding the format in Türkiye. I am waiting to see who will come from Russia, and then I will decide which steps Ukraine should take. So far, the signals from them in the media are unconvincing.

Thanks for your thoughts. My current take:

I agree that Trump is doing fine given the situation.

NATO was a weak force with a big mouth, now it’s a spent force with a big mouth.

Whoever makes Ukraine’s decisions is not living in reality and doesn’t seem to care how many Ukrainians die or have their lives upended, their homes and livelihoods gone, etc. Putin will never give that land back, and Ukraine/NATO has shown no ability to take it back so what is their Master Plan?

Just curious. Why do you think he should NOT go?

I think he should go because this push for peace was because of Trump from the very beginning and he should be there. Even after all he’s done, the Nobel prize people will be very reluctant to award Trump the peace prize, and his absence would give them an excuse to deny him.

Well, for one, he would be the only one there.

Putin has declared he won’t go, and Zelensky has said if Putin isn’t there, then he won’t go either.

And Trump needs to understand he is losing the lame attempt to be the world’s policeman. Nothing he has done so far, and nothing he could do in the future, will bring these two idiots together in peace. Trump needs to walk away.
