I admit to feeling a little uncomfortable with the MBS Show as this visit became it's more about cementing his position and they pulled out all the stops...

On the other hand, they seem sincere about opening up their closed society albeit in a very gradual manner.

Quite true. With personal wealth that permits travel, English proficiency, and modern communications media, the current generation of Saudis is well aware of how odd and often backward their country is. MBS aims to open up Saudi society enough to avert discontent without triggering a potentially lethal questioning of either the monarchy or Islam.

That strategy has limits though, and Saudi Arabia seems unlikely to remain an Islamist monarchy in the long term. Corruption, the folly of their linear city, oil dependency, and the severity of Saudi Islam are all points of vulnerability. Both friends and enemies know that and are watching closely for a stumble that could become a fall.

Did you notice that Trumps female aide carrying papers to be signed between Trump and the Prince….was not in hijab and did NOT have head cover?

This Saudi cultural concession …by the Prince no less….was actually quite astonishing!

The sight of the Prince …..who by protocol may not be touched….grabbing Trump’s hand in joy…was history in view.

And then there was the Saudi forum crowd…men and women…standing for 2 minutes of “ God Bless the USA”
