Car factories have been fully automated for quite some time. The separate "robots" in those factories tend to each do their few tasks extremely well, offering more speed, strength, precision, temperature tolerance, chemical resistance, etc. than humans.
A multi-function robot will be less capable at any one thing. (Slower, less precise, weaker, etc.)

I looked it up and the meaning is that it is too late for it to happen, which is not what I meant.
