Hall of Fame Chairman of the Board Jane Forbes Clark issued a statement on Tuesday regarding MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred's policy decision about individuals losing their permanently ineligible status after death.

"The National Baseball Hall of Fame has always maintained that anyone removed from Baseball’s permanently ineligible list will become eligible for Hall of Fame consideration," Clark said in the statement. "Major League Baseball’s decision to remove deceased individuals from the permanently ineligible list will allow for the Hall of Fame candidacy of such individuals to now be considered. The Historical Overview Committee will develop the ballot of eight names for the Classic Baseball Era Committee – which evaluates candidates who made their greatest impact on the game prior to 1980 – to vote on when it meets next in December 2027."

He ignored Rule 21(d)

“Rule 21 (d), which states: d) BETTING ON BALL GAMES. Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared ineligible for one year. Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.

It doesn’t say... unless you’ve got 4000 hits or 700 home runs or won 300 games or have 3000 strike outs. It says ANY PLAYER....”

“...... shall be declared permanently ineligible.”

Ineligible for what? One playing and betting, throwing games, etc., is a far cry from a former player who did not ever bet or throw a game while playing.

" Pete constantly lied and misrepresented what he had done after he was caught dead to rights."

Yet there are members of Congress who lie, and commit fraud on American taxpayers repeatedly without being held accountable...Pelosi, Schiff, Durbin, etc...Blumenthal for Stolen Valor, and others, but all will end up with life-time pensions and benefits just because they were able to pull the wool over the voters eyes.

does he deserve to be in the hall of fame?

I say yes

I am not into baseball, but I heard he was a great player.

They waited till after he was dead on purpose to recognize that.

and just maybe people remember his story and not repeat his mistakes.

I’m about 90% sure that Shohei Ohtani was gambling. So in that case, Pete Rose should be in the HoF.

In Roes’ autobiography “My Prison Without Bars” published by Rodale, Instagram in January 2004, Rose admitted publicly to betting on baseball games while playing and managing the Reds. He also admitted to betting on Reds games.

Ohtani most definitely bet on baseball games and should be barred for life. But MLB has no backbone.

Point taken. Baseball is a dictatorship. When politics intersects with justice, politics inevitably wins.

And very few Americans have respect for anyone in Congress.

He's huge in L.A. and Japan. So he's the most popular (only one?) star in baseball today.

Of course they were not going to punish him.

Gambling on baseball is bad, unless the league can make money of it. So, it's OK to have gambling ads in the broadcasts and at the ball parks. Hell, they even give the odds during the game so people can lose more money and MLB gets a cut through the advertising. The hypocrisy is disgusting.

He also chose to lie about his actions for 14 years, and even after acknowledging them, still doesn't seem to understand that his mistake wasn't failing to apologize sooner. It's that he bet on baseball in the first place. How gutless.

Hate to piss on a dead man’s grave, but you summed up Pete Rose nicely. He was an arrogant, self centered ass who thought all the rules were for other people, not for him. His records are in the books —- no one has tried to erase them. But in my humble opinion, the guy does not deserve the honor of the Hall of Fame.

MLB is nothing to me now.

This just reinforces it. Not a surprise.

At the very least

Pete Rose*

Place the plaque in an obscure place without lighting.

Ensure that the asterisks are included.

Since 1990, I’ve worked with many celebrity level actors, musicians, and athletes. There were three jerks I remember and Pete Rose was the biggest a-hole of them all.

Yeah well, Hornung and Karras didn’t bet on football games in which they had a duty to perform. The punishment for that even in MLB is a year suspension and you’re still eligible for the HOF.

He denied it but many other witnesses, including his wife, say he did:

Buck Weaver didn’t take a thing. He was banned because he knew the others were and didn’t report it.

“MLB is nothing to me now.”

I had a friend who was totally into baseball, even has had a business selling bats since the 80s, but a few years ago they re-arranged the letters to be BLM for remembering floyd or something and he said what you said to me in your above quote
