President Trump said Tuesday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will represent him at Russia-Ukraine peace talks expected to take place Thursday in Istanbul — after suggesting he might go himself to try to end Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II.

“Talks are being held in Turkey later this week — probably on Thursday, and they could produce some pretty good results. Our people are going to be going there, Marco is going to be going there, others are going to be going, and we’ll see if we can get it done,” Trump said.

Ukraine could have had peace talks in Turkey in March 2024, but the Z Man said "no," that he would not meet directly with Russia. Zelensky has had more excuses for not wanting peace talks than Hillary had reasons for losing in 2016.

Lavrov is Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, so he’s Rubio’s counterpart. If Rubio is there, then Russia has to send Lavrov (to do otherwise would be insulting to the US).
Zelensky painted himself into a corner with his silly law banning any negotiations with Russia, which he now claims does not apply to him and only him. So he can’t send anyone else without breaking that law. He’ll have to go himself. Unless he changes his tune about his being the only one exempted from that law.
Exactly. Barring some miracle, I don’t expect a war ending agreement this round. Ukraine wants Russia to surrender and withdraw, which isn’t going to happen of course. Zelensky can’t accept anything less and keep his head on his shoulders. It’s tragic, but it is what it is.
