To hear local Realtors tell it, losing a few bidding wars is a rite of passage for any prospective homebuyer in Rochester, N.Y.
In the western New York city, homes typically go from listed to under contract in a matter of days. A well-kept home can command dozens of offers. Listing prices might as well be starting bids. Agents often advise clients surfing online listings to set their price filters well below what they actually hope to pay, to account for the inevitable bidding wars.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
In a previous life, we bought manufacturing equipment from closed down Rochester firms for nickels on the dollar. Eastman Kodak, Xerox and other big name companies once had a strong presence here.
I grew up just east of Rochester, it has some neat aspects and history but is overall a dump. Better to visit than live there with the taxes, NYS laws, dirt bag cops, and lake effect winters.
Anyone can replicate Nick Tahou’s Garbage Plate, the bar isn’t that high.
I remember ads for Darien Lake/Seabreeze, Hill TV, Rochester House of Guitars, J&E Grocery, Wegmans, Lauer’s Furniture, and other Rochester businesses on the TV stations we got from there up in my locale, lol.
Ha, Tahou’s! My wife is from Rochester and she brought me there for a plate when we visited her parents. Pretty good. She makes her own 2-3 times a year. Love ‘em.
Sellers market, my backside.
Where I live existing homes worth a couple of hundred K have $5,000+ annual property taxed on them.
They’re sitting unsold for months.
So are the McMansions.
People can try to sell, but nobody’s buying unless the seller is willing to take a bath.
Read it and weep.
NYS has lost almost half its House seats over the last six decades for very good reason.
Rochester has a lot to offer, if you stay away from downtown.
Parts of the city are *enter at your own risk* territory.
That’s outrageous.
I pay less than $5,0000 a year and my small house on acreage is seven digits here in Montana...
There is no reason to live in Rochester.
Hundreds of other places offer a better life.
Move.
“Rochester has a lot to offer, if you stay away from downtown.
Parts of the city are *enter at your own risk* territory.”
That describes just about every city in the country, especially down south.
Too true.
Cities have become dystopian novel material.
I never thought I’d LIVE to see such a reality. It always seemed to be the imaginations of sci-fi writers.
I pay less than $5,000/year on my (now) seven figure property in California.
But for Prop 13, I’d be paying $35,000 - according to the Howard Jarvis Prop 13 generator on their website showing what we’d be paying if not for Prop 13.
Every Dem pol all the way up to the governor has tried - and is trying - to “fix” this and eliminate Prop 13. They get around it with high state taxes - and gas taxes as well, which go straight into the general fund so illegals in the state can have free medical care. Our roads are a disgrace.
Howard Jarvis is one of my heroes.
When I was 1 we moved to the LA area so my father could get an education via the GI bill (he was a ground pounder in Europe WWII).
Lived there for five years then moved away. Has some relatives in Lindsay that we visited a lot.
CA is beautiful — too bad the politician (mostly) suck.
Existing homes around 2,000 sq feet and worth a couple of hundred grand pay around 5K or more in annual property taxes.
The homes I see selling are selling because sellers are dropping their prices.
Buyers can afford the mortgages, but not the confiscatory property taxes.
And thanks to the Supreme Court’s recent Tyler v. Hennepin County decision which declared home equity theft unconstitutional, NYS is likely having a much harder time making money off of screwing homeowners.
If NYS is honoring the decision.
Someone should damn well check to ensure that Albany isn’t in violation of that ruling.
